...Coach Jim Zorn said today that Malcolm Kelly's left knee swelled up on him before the game and one of the options for him might be shutting him down for the season. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on Aug. 4 and did not play in the preseason. Among the options: more surgery or putting him on the PUP list, which would sideline him for the first six weeks. Or they could put him on IR, Zorn said.
....Another bombshell: Zorn said Stephon Heyer could challenge Jon Jansen
for the starting job, a startling revelation. Jansen did not play
Thursday because of a bruised foot and there's a chance he might not be
ready for the opener – Zorn wants to see how his foot responds first.
But Zorn did not make it seem as if the job would definitely be his
even if healthy. He talked about changing the lineup to fix some
problems. This would be one of the few spots they could make a change.
...Heyer was horrible as a left tackle in the preseason opener, but was
better at right tackle. Don't know if it had anything to do with minor
protection tweaks last night or if he's surpassed Jansen. The latter is
coming off a season-long injury and could still be rusty. But he's been
far from the only problem; against Carolina, it was across the board.
Has Jansen played his best this preseason? Probably not. Also know that
Joe Bugel loves him.
...Devin Thomas continues to make almost no impact. He did not battle
hard for the ball Thursday night, allowing a defensive back to run
through him and tip the ball away for an interception. He later ran a
two-yard route when he should have run six yards. Those sort of issues
are why people consider him very raw.
...And Kelly had knee issues in college. Now he has them in his first
year. He at least looks like he can play – if he stays healthy. Right
now, that's a mighty big if.
...No decision yet on a punter. If we had to guess, they'll opt for the
rookie. All things being equal, you have to figure the rookie will
improve. Derrick Frost is who he is at this point. He's average.
...What kind of impact will this draft class make? Looks like it'll be
minimal this season. The three second-round picks all look in question
and Justin Tryon was terrible last night and did not have a strong
summer. His size works against him in the slot and his makeup speed
seemed lacking (though it seemed much better vs. the Colts for some
reason). Maybe it's a matter of playing too soft and having too much
ground to make up. It's hard playing in the slot, but he wasn't
... The rookies who looked best were the safeties, Kareem Moore and Chris Horton – especially the latter because he w
as healthier. Colt Brennan
is a keeper with potential to be more than a backup several years from
now. Chad Rinehart was fine, but needs grooming and Rob Jackson is at
worst a practice squader.
... Todd Wade has to be in trouble. We know he's not strong on special
teams and that's not good.
...Alfred Fincher made a huge impact last night. One thing he does is
make plays; however, when Zorn talked today about some guys not being
in the right place but still looking good, he had to be talking about
Fincher. One coach told us a week or two ago that Fincher was often out
of position, but still made plays.
...Billy McMullen almost has to make the final roster with the other two
wideouts struggling. He's looked better than them. But that might mean
Marcus Mason gets whacked. In many ways, that would be good for Mason.
He's a No. 4 back in Washington. Maybe somewhere else he could play
