1. Durant Brooks is struggling.
The kid beat out Derrick Frost this summer – barely – but has [blanked] the bed in the first two games, with a net average of 28.3. That's high school territory. Worse, the kid looks rattled. The buzz among the media is that he's about to crack. Will he? We'll learn a lot about him this week in terms of how he handles the pressure.
2. The Blog.
Chris Cooley genuinely felt bad about what happened with his blog. It's why he'll be given a pass on what happened. What he says publicly is what he says privately as well.
3. Santana's deep routes.
It's great that Santana Moss caught a 61-yard touchdown pass the other day. What that will do, however, is make him more explosive underneath. When he's being used right, he does not always go deep. But corners must now play off him a bit because of the threat. What he likes most of all are the short underneath crossing routes.
For anyone who missed Clinton Portis' stint on the John Thompson show on ESPN 980 needs to check it out. He went toe to toe with ex-Redskin Brian Mitchell, who, as everyone knows, is unafraid to criticize. Portis finally fought back. It's hard to take sides in this one; I like Mitchell an awful lot. Always found him honest and forthright. And Portis is a fun guy to cover. He has his eccentricities, but he plays every bit as hard as Mitchell. I will say, BMitch had to work harder to get in the league and then stay in. Round 2 is next Tuesday.
5. Portis' comments to the Washington Post last week caused a little stir at Redskins Park.
The PR staff got a bit of tongue lashing from above for Portis saying how he'd like to run behind the best line or play in the best scheme. He's said comparable things in the past, but not with this coach.
