September 18: They said What?

Jim Zorn, Greg Blache, Chris Samuels, London Fletcher and Stephon Heyer answered questions today as the Redskins were preparing for the Cardinals this Sunday.

Redskins Head Coach Jim Zorn

On Redskins wide receiver Malcolm Kelly's status this week:

"Malcolm was very protective of his ankle today. He is trying hard and trying to push through it, but he will be questionable this week. He wants to play badly and will push himself."

On Redskins running back Clinton Portis:

"Clinton Portis has been willing to run straight ahead and get those three-yard gains. He ran several plays last week very well and he is a very versatile back."

On the Cardinals wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald:

"They are so good and so big. For example, Larry Fitzgerald can make his body do things in the air that other guys can't do. He can go up and twist to a ball, not really caring about how high is. Anquan Boldin was the biggest surprise coming in our division when I was in Seattle. He wasn't supposed to be fast and all of a sudden he caught a lot of balls. He is a great route runner with deceptive speed. Anquan Boldin is also so big that you would think that he couldn't get in and out of breaks, but in fact he is very good. Anquan Boldin may not have that long speed but he has great quickness."

On the Arizona Cardinals team:

"They not only have better athletes now than they had in the past but they are also working together and that is really the key. You can have great talent, but if you don't work together your 50/50. They were 50/50 in the past but in the last three years, they have been painful to play. So they are a very difficult team and they have it going now that they are 2-0.

On Defensive Tackle Darnell Dockett:

"Darnell Dockett is so quick you can hardly get a double team on him. He slants, bursts, rushes, pulls and runs down the line relentless. I think he is going to have a great year."

Redskins Defensive Coordinator Greg Blache

On Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner and the passing game::

"Kurt Warner is the third-highest rated quarterback in the NFL right now and is very impressive. He is playing as well as I have ever seen him play and he looks healthy. He also has two great receivers to complement him and a solid running game so you can't just play the pass."

On the Arizona Cardinals passing game::

"It's not the amount of yards that they put up that impresses me, but how many points. They have scored 20 or more points in their last 10 regular season games. The points beat you, not the yards and we have to try and minimize that. They are one of the toughest teams to defend in the NFL right now."

On the difference between Cardinals wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald::

"Anquan Boldin is more of a possession receiver and is moved around a lot to try and get him the ball. He is very tough to tackle and has great run after the catch ability. Larry Fitzgerald is more of an acrobatic type catcher, who can make some phenomenal leaping catches one-on-one with a corner.

On playing safety Chris Horton this week against the Cardinals::

"We are playing both Reed Doughty and Chris Horton this week, but Reed has more experience. Chris Horton did a great job last week, however, there were something's in the game that you guys probably won't realize that needs to be tuned up. He still needs a little more seasoning, but if he continues to play great and eliminate his mistakes, he will be a great football player."

On Reed Doughty's strengths::

"Reed Doughty has great character, anticipation, knowledge, professionalism, and has been a great football player for us the last 10 ball games he's played in. He has a great feel for the game and has a lot of character. At the end of the day, character will win more games for you than talent will."

Redskins Tackle Chris Samuels

On the win against the Saints and looking forward to the game against the Arizona Cardinals::

"We have a positive outlook on this game coming up and are still feeding on the last game. The last game we simply made plays, executed well, and won the game."

On the fourth-quarter play against the Saints::

"Most of the time when you are losing in the fourth quarter you tend to lose the game, but we kept on swinging and good things happened for us. That game showed a lot about the heart and character of this team.

Redskins Middle Linebacker London Fletcher

On stopping the Arizona Cardinals::

"It's an 11 man game out there, and I think that collectively as a defense, we have to work together. We can't allow Kurt Warner to get into a rhythm and make plays."

On Cardinals wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald::

"They are one of the best duos if not the best receiver combo that we will face this year."

On Cardinals running back Edgerrin James::

"I think that he has the ability to have some big runs for you. He will get those four yard carries and he still has the ability to break a 20-yarder as well."

On the joy of winning a game::

"Obviously winning is better than losing, but it's only our third game of the season and last week is last week. You feel better about the things that you've done and it makes practice easier, but you have to put that behind you and focus on the next game."

Redskins Tackle Stephon Heyer

On his preparation for the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals::

"I'm just working on the small things week by week. I'm working on things like correcting techniques, mental errors and working on things that I need to brush up on."
