But today's 24-17 win over Arizona was not quite a pounding, but it was a strong win over a good team with no need for late-game heroics.
The Redskins scored the winning points early in the fourth quarter, on a 17-yard screen pass to Santana Moss, and controlled the rest of the game to beat the Cardinals (2-1). The Redskins used a six-minute, 26-second drive in the fourth to waste time and later ran out the final 2:33. They did so thanks to aggressive play-calling again. Coach Jim Zorn called for a bootleg pass on second and 7, resulting in a 26-yard gain by Chris Cooley to essentially clinch the win.
Arizona gained just one first down in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Jason Campbell played another solid game, completing 22 of 30 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Corner Carlos Rogers recovered a fumble and returned a tipped interception 42 yards to set up Moss' game-winning points.
Rogers also did an excellent job covering Larry Fitzgerald, who was rather ordinary except for a 62-yard touchdown grab against zone coverage. He burned safety Reed Doughty, who anticipated a corner route, but when Fitzgerald cut up, he was left flat-footed.
The touchdown tied the game at 17.
But that was it for Arizona.
The Redskins led 10-7 at halftime, thanks in part to Rogers' fumble recovery which led to a 48-yard Shaun Suisham field goal. Campbell got the Redskins on the board by directing a touchdown drive on the first series. He completed all six of his throws on the drive, but it was Clinton Portis who ran in from the 3-yard line.
Arizona's Anquan Boldin caught a 4-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. But he didn't do much else, catching just three passes for 25 yards. Corner Shawn Springs was mostly responsible for shutting him down. After the game, Springs said, "He shouldn't have had a catch."
Neil Rackers tied the game at 10 in the third quarter with a 26-yard field goal.
But the Redskins answered with an 80-yard drive, capped by a two-yard toss to Todd Yoder.
The Redskins now face Dallas and Philadelphia in the next two weeks. Even if they exit this stretch with a 2-3 record, they have positioned themselves well.
