Washington made several transactions – signing running back Shaun Alexander, punter Ryan Plackemeier and safety Mike Green. The Redskins released punter Durant Brooks with an injury settlement and waived safety Justin Hamilton.
They also placed safety Reed Doughty on injured reserve, thereby ending his season, because of nerve damage in his back.
The Redskins want Alexander to back up Clinton Portis while Ladell Betts recovers from a sprained knee. Betts said his recovery could take three weeks. Coach Jim Zorn said today that he's not sure what will happen when Betts returns as far as who would be the primary backup.
"It's the nature of the business," Betts said. "They have to have somebody step in."
Rock Cartwright will be the No. 1 backup against the Browns on Sunday.
Plackemeier kicked for Seattle the past two seasons but was cut this summer. Green also played for the Seahawks, spending one year on injured reserve and playing some last season. But he played four years under Greg Blache in Chicago, finishing second on the team in tackles on two occasions.
Plackemeier averaged 42.4 yards per punt, and 35.8 yards net, for the Seahawks. Josh Miller also worked out today.
Green will help on special teams, where the loss of Doughty is equally big. He'll also help with the young safeties, Chris Horton and Kareem Moore.
The Redskins, though, have used various alignments with their secondary. Last week, for instance, they used three corners and one safety in some base packages. In that package, corner Shawn Springs can drop to safety.
Hamilton wasn't surprised by his release.
"I've been stealing a paycheck," he said. "I'm surprised I lasted this long."
He added that he was so certain he would not stick this long that his lease is up at the end of October.
