...Running back Clinton Portis was named the NFC's Offensive Player of the Month after rushing for 575 yards in October. The award is clearly deserved. But it doesn't bring any plaques or money. Just, as Portis said, an ‘'attaboy.'' But it is a team honor considering how well the line, backs and tight ends have been blocking.
...Receiver Santana Moss returned one punt Sunday, but it was enough to have him earn NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Moss returned the punt 80 yards for a touchdown in Washington's 25-17 victory at Detroit.
...Moss did not practice today and there are mixed signals about his availability for Monday night's game vs. Pittsburgh. Moss was telling people he wasn't sure if he would play, but coach Jim Zorn was optimistic that he would.
...There was another long list of players not practicing in addition to Moss: Portis, Jason Taylor (calf), Shawn Springs (calf), Pete Kendall (knees), Rock Cartwright (knee), Malcolm Kelly (knee) and LaRon Landry (hamstring). Taylor, Springs and Kelly won't play Monday but the others are expected to be available.
...With the winds whipping and the temperatures falling it felt like late December and not late October.
...It's funny to watch the media in action during the open locker-room sessions. If you ever want to see reporters and cameramen move fast, just start talking to a player. Then the pack hustles over. Or if one or two reporters walk outside the locker room, often times the entire pack starts to follow, wondering if someone is talking in the lobby.
...Don't be surprised if the Redskins start using the Wildcat formation in the second half. Antwaan Randle El told Pittsburgh reporters just that on a conference call today. One coach told me the same thing a few weeks back, but did not want it out there. So it wasn't written. And his own player blew it. For all we know at this point it may just be something they tinker with during the bye, but don't go much further with it.
...Here's a good one: Chris Cooley beat Shaun Suisham in their fantasy football league last week because ... Cooley has Suisham on his team! Suisham got Cooley 14 points. So at least one Redskin wasn't all that upset with the lack of red zone production.
...By the way, Cooley has been thrown to only four times in the red zone.
