FREE Steelers 23, Redskins 6 What went right: The Redskins recovered an onsides kick to start the game and converted it into three points. They intercepted a pass on the next series and turned that into three more. The defense held Pittsburgh to 229 total yards and only 90 in the first half. Running back Clinton Portis had a 22-yard gain, though not much else. The defense sacked Ben Roethlisberger three times in the first half, blitzing most of the night.
What went wrong: The Redskins started their first two drives in Pittsburgh territory and managed just two field goals. Another first-quarter drive opened inside the 50 and a punt soon followed. Those drives haunted Washington the rest of the game. Failing to put the Steelers into an early hole proved to be the difference. The Steelers blocked a Ryan Plackemeier punt when protection broke down on the left side. The Redskins converted just three of 15 third downs and Clinton Portis had just 51 yards rushing. In the second half, once the game got away from Washington, the Steelers teed off on Jason Campbell. He threw his first interception – snapping his franchise record at 271 passes and the Redskins' NFL record at 379 -- and was also sacked seven times and hit numerous other times. The Steelers converted five of seven third downs in the second half.
Key sequence: The Redskins held a 6-3 lead in the second quarter and the Steelers' offense was doing nothing. That's when Carlos Rogers had a chance to do some major damage. But he dropped an interception that he could easily have returned for a touchdown. Instead of a 13-3 lead, the Redskins instead eventually trailed 10-6 at halftime.
Stars of the game: Linebacker London Fletcher had an unofficial team-high eight tackles. Defensive end Demetric Evans had two sacks and two hurries. Kedric Golston also had a sack. Andre Carter tipped a pass that Cornelius Griffin intercepted. Chris Cooley finished with eight catches for 78 yards. Pittsburgh's Bryon Leftwich's quick delivery hurt Washington in the second half. He completed seven of 10 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.
