Why they should draft him: The Redskins made it clear to Jon Jansen earlier this offseason that they were looking to upgrade the position. They have not yet done so – and there's no way Stephon Heyer is a long-term answer. Jansen is optimistic about what he can do this season, but the fact is the Redskins want an alternative. Oher, an offensive tackle from Mississippi, is not their first choice, but he is one of the top four tackles in the draft and is very talented. He has the athleticism to get out in space. He's also explosive. If nothing else he would provide a nice bookend with Chris Samuels and, perhaps, take over for him someday. If you're going to draft a tackle this high, it should be with the idea that he'll one day play on the left side. And if it's a choice between a SLB and a tackle, you take the tackle. It's a more premium position.
Why they shouldn't: Because the reason Oher would be there at 13 are the questions about his consistency and work habits. There's reason to believe that much of what led to his inconsistency stems from the fact that he played for three different line coaches in four years. Put him with Joe Bugel and he'll get the coaching needed to improve. However, we remember Andre Johnson, who was supposedly a good athlete and talented. But one red flag about him involved his passion for the game. The20same is true of Oher. Does he have the passion? If he doesn't, then don't give him big money. Teams make big mistakes when they reach for linemen.
