Safety Hamza Abdullah lived a dream last week. On Wednesday night, he attended a dinner at the White House to acknowledge the end of Ramadan. The following morning, he flew to Oakland and played that night against the Raiders.
"Now that the game is over, I get a chance to reflect and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity," Hamza said. "That's just ridiculous, a very humbling experience."
Hamza was seated at the same table as the President. Hamza's brother, Husain, a safety for the Vikings, was seated at the next table. The President asked Hamza where his brother was.
Hamza called out to his brother, who looked over. Hamza then got the President's attention. "He's like, 'what's up, Husein?'" Hamza said.
--QB Kevin Kolb will constantly be compared to Kurt Warner, the best quarterback in the team's history in Arizona. But Kolb has proven he can do at least one thing Warner couldn't: run. He had a 15-yard gain in the preseason opener after getting flushed because of pressure.
"That's why I tell those guys, just keep fighting. You get beat, just push them on by and I'll step up in the pocket and try to make a play," Kolb said.
-- Kolb was happy with the way the Cardinals played in the opener. There are many things to work on, he said, but it was good for a start. "I think everybody is excited about the intensity and attitude of the team," Kolb said. "From what it sounds like, little bit different than last year so something to build on.
"It's crazy to think that five days ago I stepped on the field with these guys because we've already come a long way. It's exciting to think about what the future holds, how much better we can get."
-- Kolb was the only of the four quarterbacks who didn't throw for a touchdown against the Raiders. John Skelton is no. 2, with Rich Bartel and Max Hall competing for the third job.
"It kind of muddied the picture; they all played pretty well," coach Ken Whisenhunt said.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I was telling one guy on the sidelines that it's amazing we can sit there all offseason and not do much at all, no full-contact drills and within five days of practice you're out here playing a game and it looks halfway decent." -- QB Kevin Kolb after the first preseason game.
