Saints First Round Possibilities (Part 1)

Heading into the offseason the Saints have two clear cut need that stand out above their other needs. Defensive tackle and corner back both must be addressed if the Saints hope to improve their team before the next season starts.

While the defensive tackle position was partially addressed by the team last season with the selection of Jonathan Sullivan, the deletions of Grady Jackson and Norman Hand from the roster over the last 2 seasons has left the Saints thin and inexperienced at DT. Conversely the Saints have not taken a day 1 CB since they drafted Alex Molden in the mid 1990's. The Saints select 18th overall in the first round. Here's a look at the Defensive Tackles they are likely to consider with their first pick.

Defensive Tackle

Vince Wilfolk and Tommie Harris are both likely to be long gone by the time the Saints select. If they are not, however, the Saints would be wise to snatch either of them up. It might even be advisable for them to trade up a few spots to take them so long as they do not get rid of their second round pick.

Randy Starks will likely fall to within the Saints striking distance. If they have Starks rated highly enough they could very easily deal a mid round selection and move up to the early teens where they should be able to secure his services.

Two other DT's are possibilities at this spot. Dwan Edwards may be this years Kevin Williams and move from being just a day 1 pick to being a high first round pick based on his Senior Bowl performance. While that is unlikely, a good showing at the combine coupled with some solid interviews there could very easily push Edwards into the middle of the first round. He is a big body that would free up Sullivan to make plays for the Saints in the interior. Likewise Marcus Tubbs is a big bodied player. Tubbs is another big bodied guy that could free up Sullivan. Unlike Edwards though Tubbs did not play in the Senior Bowl and needs a big combine and superior workouts and interviews to move into this range.
