The Saints Want a Trade

The New Orleans Saints are continuing to discuss trade possibilities with numerous teams around the league. They are eager to trade defensive end Darren Howard and free safety Tebucky Jones which appears to be a good move, tells you why.

Darren Howard has been one of the best players on the defensive side of the ball for the Saints, last year he had 46 tackles and 11 sacks. However the Saints apparently know last years first round draft pick Will Smith (6 foot 3, 282 pounds) can replace him. Considering he wasn't the starter Smith's stats (40 tackles and 7.5 sacks) are more impressive than Howard's.

Rumor has it the Saints are interested in trading Howard to the Dallas Cowboys for Dat Nguyen and a second round draft pick. It's unlikely that the Saints will settle for anything less than that, but they are hoping to get the Cowboys second pick in the 1st round, 20th overall.

Tebucky Jones is another player the Saints have a desire to trade. He led the Saints in tackles with 102 this past season, but he has had only 2 interceptions the past 2 seasons. The Saints are trying to trade Jones because they just signed unrestricted free agent Dwight Smith last week. Smith (5 foot 10, 201 pounds) had 3 interceptions last year and 3 forced fumbles proving he's a better playmaker than Jones.

One team interested in Jones are the Miami Dolphins who lost former Saint, Sammy Knight to the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency. The Saints are hoping to get a early second day draft pick for Jones but would most likely settle for a 6th or 7th round draft pick. If the Saints can't find a team willing to trade for Jones it appears they will strongly consider releasing him.

It's no secret the Saints want draft picks, with the picks you can expect them to draft a slew of defensive players. Most Notably in the secondary, However they could  use some talented run stoppers as well. Statistically in 2004 the Saints had the worse defense in the NFL giving away 383.8 yards per game.
