The Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

The New Orleans Saints threw the ball 542 times last year, the reason they can afford to throw that much is their talented group of wide receivers and tight ends. SaintsInsider.com tells you what you can expect to see from the group in 2005.

The Saints have an explosive group of receivers including veteran Joe Horn who is arguably the most underrated wide receiver in the NFL. Horn had 94 receptions last year for 1399 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was 2nd in overall receiving yards, just 7 yards shy of leading the NFL. Unfortunately Horn 33 years old, but Saints fans are hoping he doesn't show any signs of aging.

Across from Horn will be the disappointing Donte' Stallworth. Drafted in the 1st round of the 2002 draft, Stallworth has never lived up to his potential due to injuries and dropping passes. However he is only 24 years old and did show signs of improvement last year with 767 yards. If Stallworth can stay healthy and become consistent he has the potential to be one of the elite receivers in the NFL.

Since Jerome Pathon was released there will be a battle for the #3 receiver spot between Michael Lewis, Talman Gardner, and Devery Henderson. Lewis, the dangerous kick and punt returner, had 8 receptions last year for 127 yards. Gardner had just one reception for 23 yards but he is talented and could be productive if handed the opportunity. Henderson was drafted in the 2nd round last year and had no catches during his rookie season. He has the potential to become a star in the NFL and barring injury he will see the field in 2005.

Jim Haslett and Co. will have to figure out who is the best of an average group of tight ends. Boo Williams led the group last year with 362 yards and 5 touchdowns. Ernie Conwell had 102 yards with 1 touchdown. The Saints also signed free agent Shad Meier who caught a career high 25 passes for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns last year for the Tennessee Titans. Williams is talented but still needs to improve his blocking and become a bigger threat in the passing game. Conwell is the best blocker of the group but isn't a big receiving threat. Meier is an all around solid tight end but has to prove he can be the #1 guy.
