The Pro Day workouts are beginning to wane and the New Orleans Saints are starting to put together their schedule of visits at their training facility next month.
Saintsinsider.com reported on Saturday Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston's visit next month. Now, Scout.com's Ed Thompson has told saintsinsider.come that Troy cornerback Leodis McKelvin will visit the team April 7-8 at the Saints' training facility.
The Saints, like every NFL team, are allowed 30 on-campus player visits during April.
McKelvin (5-10 ½, 186 pounds) is considered the No. 2 cornerback in the draft, according to Scout.com, putting him right behind USF's Mike Jenkins. However, there is a consensus building that McKelvin could be the first cornerback taken.
McKelvin had two private workouts in early March in Troy, Ala., which were well attended by NFL scouts, including Baltimore, a team that will select ahead of New Orleans in the draft and is reportedly interested.
McKelvin earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors after notching 60 tackles, 2.5 stops for loss and three forced fumbles last year. He also deflected nine passes and intercepted two others.
Where McKelvin really intrigues many teams is in the return game. He led the Sun Belt and was fourth in the nation in punt returns with a 17.4-yard average, and was third in the Sun Belt in kickoff returns with a 23.2-yard average. He also led the team in all-purpose yardage with 1,228 yards and scored three touchdowns, all on punt returns.
