Saints sign former Cougars SS to deal

Saintsinsider.com has confirmed that the New Orleans Saints have signed this former Conference USA strong safety, even though the Saints have not released the information. Find out who just joined Roman Harper in the secondary and why this underrated player could make an impact in this exclusive article.

Saintsinsider.com has confirmed through a league source that Houston strong safety Rocky Schwartz has signed a free-agent deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Schwartz (5-11, 204 pounds) should be in New Orleans for the Saints' rookie camp next week.

Schwartz was considered by some draft services to be a Top 20 safety, but injury concerns probably precipitated a tumble out of the draft.

Schwartz missed all of the spring in 2007 with knee surgery. But he bounced back in the fall to become the Cougars' leading tackler once again, and his 4.42-second 40-yard dash and 42-inch vertical leap at his pro day put him back on the radar with NFL executives. The Tennessee Titans flew Schwartz in for a visit before the draft.

He finished last season with 103 tackles, adding 4 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 8 pass break-ups, 3 forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Schwartz joins a position group that was one of the worst in the NFL last year, ranking No. 30 in pass defense. The Saints have Chris Reis, Kevin Kaesviharn, Josh Bullocks and Roman Harper at safety.
