Kitna named starter in Cincy

Head coach Dick LeBeau talked to his three quarterbacks Monday and told them he had decided to start ex-Seahawk, Jon Kitna in the season opener.

Kitna was one of the Bengals' biggest off-season acquisitions, yet he wasn't guaranteed a starting job. He entered the Cincinnati training camp, facing competition from quarterbacks Scott Mitchell and Akili Smith.

"It's a relief in the sense that we've got some direction now - more for the team than for myself," Kitna said to the local media.

The play of all three quarterbacks has been sub-par at this point of the preseason.

Each quarterback was given a start and allowed to play an entire half. From this, Kitna led a drive that resulted in a field goal. Smith was banged up and now suffers from an injured shoulder, and Mitchell threw two picks and was sacked for a safety last Saturday in a 20-10 loss to Buffalo.
