Fresh after the Memorial Day holiday, the Seahawks will kick off Organized Team Activities on Tuesday. Some of the more familiar faces on the roster, however, won't be there.
As was first reported by Danny O'Neil of 710 ESPN, quarterback Russell Wilson is among the veterans who will not be attending the voluntary workouts. Recently acquired tight end Jimmy Graham and starting LEO defensive end Cliff Avril will also miss at least a portion of this week's OTAs.
According to a source, the team has been made aware of each player's plans to be absent. Wilson and Graham, reportedly, are attending the funeral services for Tammy Meyerson, the tight end's longtime manager and mentor.
Even with the sensitive nature of their activities, speculation is likely to start that Wilson's absence is contract related, though O'Neil specifically noted in his report that this was not the case. There have been multiple reports that Wilson and the Seahawks are "millions apart" in contract negotiations, though SeahawkFootball.com has been told that the sides are, in fact, closer to an extension than some believe.
Regardless of why Wilson, Graham and Avril will not be attending, their absence is a bit disconcerting. While Wilson and Graham were among the Seahawks working together in Hawaii during the offseason, that wasn't with the help of offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Seattle's coaches. For John Schneider's big trade for Graham to work out, it is critical that his star quarterback and tight end develop on-field chemistry.
It appears for now that the quarterbacks under center this week will be B.J. Daniels and R.J. Archer, neither of whom have taken a regular season snap in the NFL.
If there is a silver lining to Tuesday's news it is that rookie Frank Clark is likely to get even more work with Avril reportedly out due to a family issue.
