Sherman homers with charity softball game

Sunday was the third annual all-star softball game hosted by All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman, benefiting local children in need. It has become one of the most popular of the several charitable events held by Seahawks each year. It didn't take Sherman long to make his fans and friends happy as he led off the game with a home run.

Sounds like it was a good time had by all yesterday at Safeco Field in Seattle where Richard Sherman held his annual charity softball game.

The game (Sherman's third) included several teammates with the Seahawks as well as many other stars from other sports including former Sonic (and current member of the Oklahoma City Thunder) Kevin Durant and other NBA standouts with local ties like Isaiah Thomas and Jamal Crawford. Among the Seahawks attending were Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Jermaine Kearse, Doug Baldwin and both current and former members of the Legion of the Boom, including Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Cary Williams, as well as Byron Maxwell and Brandon Browner.

Among the highlights was Sherman homering on the first pitch of the game, Lynch scoring the game-winner and Wilson winning the Home Run Derby. Matt Barnes, an NBA player with the Memphis Grizzlies who briefly considered making a run at the NFL, showed off his all-around athleticism, being named MVP of the 16-15 win for the green team.

While Sherman is perhaps best known nationally for his mouth, residents in the greater Seattle area should by now know of his heart. He is among the Seahawks who are frequent visitors to local schools and do lots of charitable work.

Wilson, in fact, left the game early so that he could go to his own event, the Russell Wilson Passing Academy, which is designed to help kids (ages 8-17) "develop the fundamental skills of being a great football player through instruction, but our objective is much greater. The RWPA exists to promote the mental and physical development of youth, with the goal of encouraging kids to develop high character and moral standards, a sense of competitiveness and fair play, a respect for authority, service to others, and a love of God, family, and country."

Via Sherman's website, here is a description of the beneficiaries of the game.

Blanket Coverage: The Richard Sherman Family Foundation is excited to present its 3rd Annual Charity Dinner and Auction. 100% of all net proceeds from this year's event will go directly to Blanket Coverage. With proceeds from last year's dinner and softball game, Blanket Coverage donated $62,500 in $2,500 incremental gifts, to 25 different nonprofits. Over the holidays we provided 25 Seattle-area families in need with gifts and a holiday experience for the whole family with several Seahawks players at the Seahawks facility. Finally we were able to provide hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to students in Washington State including many of the victims of the Carlton Complex fire in eastern Washington. Top Stories
