Pete Carroll: Marshawn Lynch a game-time decision vs. Chicago Bears

If the Seahawks are to get into the win column Sunday in the home opener, it might be without the services of All-Pro running back Marshawn Lynch, who is still recovering from a calf injury suffered last week against Green Bay. Lynch is one of several key players from both teams who may miss Week Three.

Though he had been held out of much of the team's practices this week, Carroll's admission Friday that Seahawks All-Pro running back Marshawn Lynch would be a game-time decision is concerning for a team facing an 0-3 start and struggling to get its vaunted running game on track.

"Yeah, he's got a calf that we're working on," Carroll said following Friday's practice when asked about Lynch's health and availability Sunday against the Chicago Bears. "We've been able to condition him some, but we just want to make sure and take care of him during the week, and so he'll run tomorrow and we'll see if he's okay, and it will go all the way to game day on this one though."

Lynch earned his BeastMode nickname in part due to his extraordinary toughness but given the early season hole the team is fighting out of to remain in the NFC West race, Carroll and the Seahawks may not want to risk aggravating the injury and limiting their star back in other games.

Vegas has already acknowledged the importance of Lynch's availability to Seattle's chances at winning Sunday. The Seahawks had been listed by some as high as a 16 point favorite against the Bears but that number shrank to just a touchdown given Friday's news.

Should Lynch be unable to play, veteran Fred Jackson and undrafted rookie Thomas Rawls would receive the bulk of the carries against the Bears. Jackson is a terrific receiver out of the backfield but the Seahawks feel that Rawls is a closer match to Lynch's trademark physical, downhill running style.

Jackson has as many catches (three, including a touchdown against St. Louis) as rushes over the first two games, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Rawls only has two carries for a total of five yards to this point (both against St. Louis) but did see time on the field last week against the Packers while Lynch was being checked on the sideline by Seahawks head physician Dr. Elias Khalfayan.

In other important injury news, Chicago Bears head coach John Fox confirmed what Jeremy Stoltz of BearReport.com told us Thursday - that quarterback Jay Cutler and wideout Alshon Jeffery would not be suiting up against Seattle. Backups Jimmy Clausen and former Washington State standout receiver Marquess Wilson are expected to start in their place.

For the Seahawks, Carroll said that reserve defensive backs Tharold Simon (dislocated toe) and Steven Terrell (hip) are out vs. the Bears.
