Seahawks take a bite out of Lions

The new and improved Seahawk offense looked every bit that. <br><br> The Seattle offense scored on four of six first half possessions and a 83 yard punt return to take 35 to14 half time lead that coming into the game Seahawk Head Coach Mike Holmgren had said that he would open up the offense in the Detroit game in hopes of scoring quicker and more often.

" We talked about opening it up this game and Mike kind of had us fired up at the hotel the night before, because we knew the plays he was going to fall." Matt Hasselbeck said of Holmgrens plan to open up the offense.

The Seattle offense responded to the coach loosening up the reins. Seattle scored on its first three possessions of the half.

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck rushed for one touchdown and passed for another. The passing score was a 34 yarder to Bobby Engram while the rushing score was a four yarder on the Seahawks first possession of the game.

Shaun Alexander scored from the one and Koren Robinson recovered a Matt Hasselbeck fumble in the end zone before Engram's 34 yard td reception and 83 yard punt return to end Seattle's first half scoring eruption.

" We played a good first quarter, we wanted to establish something early." Alexander said of the offense plans to score early and often. " We just jumped on them today, we made plays and had some fun"

Detroit quarterback Joey Harrington passed for two first half touchdowns, a 72 yarder to Scotty Anderson and a 15 yarder to Az-Zahir Hakim, Harrington finished the game 26 of 48-285 yards passing 2 td and two interceptions.

Seattle's sixth straight victory at home was a two-sided effort. Seattle's defense shut out the Lions offense in the second half. The Seattle defense stopped the Lions offense on two consecutive trips inside the red zone.

The first stop came after a 14-play drive stalled at the Seattle four-yard line and the second drive ended in an interception by Shawn Springs at the Seattle one-yard line. Springs returned the interception to the Seattle eight-yard line.

The Seattle defense came up big again when Reggie Tongue intercepted a Joey Harrington pass at the Seattle fourteen-yard line with less than four minutes left in the game. "It was man coverage and we were doubling on that receiver." Tongue said of the play." He ran up the field running a seven route and I got there when the ball got there and I just reached over and grab it."

Game Notes:
Seattle's win keeps them tied with the Saint Louis Rams for the lead in the NFC WEST. Linebacker Anthony Simmons did not play due to violation of a team rule.

Shaun Alexander rushed for 110 yards on 20 carries. Alexander had team high five receptions for 27yards. Darrell Jackson had four receptions for 56 yards. Hasselbeck finished the day 21-28 207 yards and one touchdown. Hasselbeck had no interceptions and finished the day with a 107.3 QB rating.
