NFL Europe: World Bowl Summary & Photo Gallery

For the first time in the franchise's history, the Amsterdam Admirals are the champions of the NFL Europe League. The Admirals beat the Berlin Thunder, 27-21, in World Bowl XIII. The game was much closer down the stretch than a totally dominant Admiral first half would have anyone expecting.

It looked like a rout when Amsterdam opened up a 24-7 lead in the third quarter behind quarterback Kurt Kittner (allocated by Chicago), who completed 15 passes in 28 attempts for 239 yards and TDs and took the World Bowl MVP award. Dave Ragone (allocated by Houston), Kittner’s counterpart, drove an air-heavy Berlin attack as the Thunder endeavored to make their second-half comeback. Ragone threw 48 times, completing 30, for 328 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort.

Berlin’s furious comeback was stopped on the very last play of the game. The Thunder had the ball at Amsterdam’s 22-yard line on 4th and 16. Ragone threw to Robert Redd (allocated by Philadelphia) in the end zone, but the play was broken up by Amsterdam safety Norman Lejeune (allocated by Tennessee) to conclude perhaps the most exciting World Bowl in the NFLEL’s history.
