Seahawks Sign Williams, Place Bannister on IR

As first reported on the team's official site, the Seahawks announced on Tuesday that WR Alex Bannister has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Bannister cracked his right collarbone during Seattle’s 21-18 win over the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday. It was the third time in less than a year that Bannister had suffered similar injuries.

After a 2003 selection to the Pro Bowl for his special teams work, Bannister’s 2004 was a disappointment. He was on his way to another excellent season when he broke his right clavicle for the first time against the Carolina Panthers on October 31, 2004. The injury ended his season. During a voluntary passing camp in June of 2005, Bannister broke the same collarbone again, putting him out of action until after the team's training camp.

Bannister, a 5th-round Seahawks pick in 2001 from Eastern Kentucky, has caught 9 passes for 121 yards and 1 touchdown in his NFL career.

The Seahawks filled the roster spot made available by Bannister’s IR classification by signing CB Jimmy Williams. Drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 6th round in 2001, Williams played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2001 through 2004. After signing a one-year deal with New Orleans as an unrestricted free agent in April, Williams was released by the Saints on September 3rd.

Primarily known as a special teams player, Williams was the NFL’s leading punt returner in 2002 with a 16.8 before a knee injury ended his season in December. Williams finally got a shot at showing what he could do at cornerback in 2004 during extensive playing time at the position during San Francisco's dismal 2-14 season. Williams, however, did not play well during six starts and nickelback duty in six other games. He finished with 42 tackles and a sack, but was often exposed in coverage, according to Craig Massei, the editor of San Francisco did not appear interested in offering him a contract as they looked to upgrade at cornerback.

During his five-year NFL career, Williams has returned 55 punts for 576 yards and a touchdown, and 49 kickoffs for 1.030 yards. He has amassed 47 solo tackles and one interception. Top Stories
