2006 Training Camp - What You Need to Know

The defending NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks open their 31st season when they begin preparations for their title defense with the start of training camp on Saturday, July 29. Quarterbacks and rookies reported a day early and will join the rest of the team Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m. for the first session.

Cheney, 15 miles west of Spokane, hosts the Seahawks for the 20th time, having provided living space and training quarters for the team's initial training camp in 1976.

From 1976-1985, the team traveled east of the Cascade Mountain Range for its summer camp, before moving into its current home in Kirkland, on a full-time basis. While training in Kirkland, from 1986-1996, the Seahawks utilized the dormitories and cafeteria at the adjacent Northwest University.

The team returned to its roots in Cheney and the first-class athletic facilities at Eastern Washington University in 1997.

On Saturday, August 5, the team will put their seven days of two-a-day practices to the test with an intrasquad scrimmage at EWU’s Woodward Field.

The Seahawks scrimmage will take place on August 5 at Woodward Stadium located on the Eastern Washington University campus. The 2006 Extravaganza is full of activities leading up to the scrimmage, including live performances by Blue Thunder, the Sea Gals and a speech from Coach Holmgren.

Everyday throughout training camp, the Seahawks Experience, which is an interactive experience for kids, will take place on the Eastern Washington University tennis courts. The experience includes various Touchdown City inflatables such as an obstacle course, vertical leaper, and quarterback challenge. Other activities include the Seahawks coloring station, daily autograph sessions, a giveaway poster for all that attend, and kids club giveaways for those who sign up for the kids club.

Following the scrimmage, the team will have another five practice days before heading home to Seattle to open preseason play against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, August 12. The Seahawks head to Indianapolis on August 20 to take on the Colts on a nationally televised Sunday night matchup on NBC.

After breaking camp on Thursday, August 24, Seattle visits the San Diego Chargers August 26. Preseason play ends at Qwest Field against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday, August 31.

The Seahawks are coming off of the finest season in franchise history (13-3) and their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. In fact, over the last three seasons, no other NFC team has posted a better record than Seattle (32-16).

At Qwest Field, the Seahawks are 22-3 since week 16 of the 2002 season – the best regular-season home record in the NFL over that span.

Offensively, the Seahawks have finished ranked in the top 10 each of the last four seasons, including second in 2005, averaging 369.7 yards per game. League MVP Shaun Alexander helped fuel the offense last season scoring an NFL record 28 touchdowns.

On defense, Seattle returns the entire defensive line and linebacker corps that led the NFL in sacks (50) and finished fifth in the NFL allowing a club-record low 94.4 yards rushing per game. The defense will be bolstered by free agent LB Julian Peterson, who adds additional pass rushing and coverage skills.
