Earlier this week, the San Francisco 49ers announced that they had signed fifth round linebacker Scott McKillop and seventh round defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois to four-year contracts.
The signings were a bit of a surprise, as mid-to-late round picks usually aren't signed less than three weeks after the draft. Teams are usually content to let someone else knock over the first domino, but in this case, both the 49ers and the player's agents were proactive about getting those deals done.
Via Twitter, Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat is reporting that McKillop received a signing bonus of $192,250, a 6% increase over what the 156th pick of the 2008 NFL Draft received. Maiocco also reports that Jean-Francois received a $43,000 signing bonus, a 5.7% increase over what the 244th pick of the 2008 NFL Draft received.
Jean-Francois' deal should help the Seattle Seahawks sign three of their seven picks, and to do so rather quickly.
Safety Courtney Greene was chosen directly after Jean-Francois, with defensive end Nick Reed and tight end Cameron Morrah going back-to-back two spots later. Over the last three seasons, the differences in signing bonuses between each pick at that point in the draft is a few hundred to a thousand dollars, at most.
