Seahawks 2009 Roster Analysis - Part IV

Brian McIntyre of NorthwestFootball.net takes a look at who's a lock, who's on the bubble, and who's a long-shot to make the Seattle Seahawks' 53-man roster.

Quarterbacks

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 4
Players Kept in 2008: 3
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 4
Locks: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Mike Teel
Long-shot: Jeff Rowe

Teel and Rowe will carry the load on Thursday, but Teel is clearly ahead on the depth chart.

Running Backs

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 7 (4 RB, 3 FB)
Players Kept in 2008: 6
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 8 (4 RB, 4 FB)
Locks: Julius Jones, Edgerrin James, Justin Forsett, Owen Schmitt (FB), Justin Griffith (FB)
Long-Shots: Devin Moore (RB), David Kirtman (FB)
Roster Moves: Edgerrin James (signed, 8/25); T.J. Duckett (contract terminated, 8/25); Dan Curran (waived, 8/30)

Unlike when Forsett did it a season ago, no back has stepped up and forced the team to keep a sixth player at the position. They'll go with five, with questions remaining about who starts at fullback and just how many carries James will get when the regular season begins.

Wide Receivers

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 11
Players Kept in 2008: 6
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 11
Locks: T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Nate Burleson, Deion Branch, Deon Butler
Bubble: Jordan Kent, Courtney Taylor, Ben Obomanu, Logan Payne
Long-Shots: Mike Hass, Michael Bumpus

Kent, Taylor, Obomanu, and Payne are still vying for the one of two roster spots available. Special teams should be the determining factor, which continues to give Kent and Taylor the edge. Playing time in the third preseason game is important, and Hass and Bumpus combined to play one offensive snap.

Tight Ends

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 4
Players Kept in 2008: 3
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 5
Locks: John Carlson, John Owens
Bubble: Joe Newton, Cameron Morrah
Roster moves: John Tereshinski (waived, 8/30)

Newton continues to hold the edge over seventh-round pick Morrah, whose two penalties the other night didn't help his cause.

Offensive Linemen

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 13 (6 T, 7 C/G)
Players Kept in 2008: 9 (4 T, 5 G/C)
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 14 (7 T, 7 C/G)
Locks: Walter Jones (T), Sean Locklear (T), Ray Willis (T/G), Max Unger (C/G), Chris Spencer (C/G), Rob Sims (G), Steve Vallos (C/G), Mansfield Wrotto (G), Kyle Williams (T/G)
Bubble: Cory Withrow (C/G), Na'Shan Goddard (G/T)
Long-Shot: William Robinson (T), Andre Ramsey (T), Brian De La Puente (G)
Roster moves: Grey Ruegamer (released, 8/25); Brian De La Puente (claimed off waivers, 8/25)

I'm cautiously elevating Williams to the "lock" list, bringing the total on the offensive line to 9, which is the number of bodies they brought into the 2008 regular season. The injuries to Jones and Spencer means a 10th player could be kept, with either Withrow or Goddard getting the nod, but it wouldn't be surprising if the ‘Hawks keep an eye on the waiver wire to fill the back-end of their o-line depth chart.

Defensive Linemen

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 14 (7 DT, 7 DE)
Players Kept in 2008: 9 (4 DT / 5 DE)
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 13 (8 DE / 5 DT)
Locks: Patrick Kerney (DE), Lawrence Jackson (DE), Darryl Tapp (DE), Brandon Mebane (DT), Colin Cole (DT), Red Bryant (DT), Corey Redding (DT/DE), Nick Reed (DE)
Bubble: Baraka Atkins (DE), Craig Terrill (DT), Michael Bennett (DT/DE)
Long-Shots: Derek Walker (DE/DT)
Roster moves: Kevin Brown (waived, 8/30)

He's such a likeable guy, it pains me to do this, but I've moved Craig Terrill to the "bubble". I'd like to think that they'd find a place for him, but Redding's versatility at least creates the possibility of going with three tackles, or they could go younger, with Michael Bennett. Since last December, Atkins' play has greatly improved, but he's behind Redding and Jackson on the left side, and Kerney, Tapp, and Reed on the right. With the injuries to the offensive line, a sixth defensive end might not be a luxury this team can afford.

Linebackers

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 9
Players Kept in 2008: 6
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 9
Locks: Lofa Tatupu, Leroy Hill, Aaron Curry, David Hawthorne, Will Herring
Bubble: D.D. Lewis, Lance Laury
Long-shot: Dave Philistin
Roster moves: Shane Simmons (waived, 8/30)

Not trying to create controversy here or anything, but Laury is younger, faster, and cheaper than Lewis, and when you're talking about the sixth linebacker, those are factors.

Secondary

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 13 (7 CB, 6 S)
Players Kept in 2008: 7 (4 CB / 3 S)
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 13 (7 CB / 6 S)
Locks: Marcus Trufant (PUP), Ken Lucas, Josh Wilson, Kelly Jennings, Jordan Babineaux, Deon Grant, Brian Russell, C.J. Wallace
Bubble: Kevin Hobbs, Jamar Adams, Courtney Greene
Long-Shots: Marquis Floyd, Travis Fisher

It appears likely that Marcus Trufant will spend the first six weeks of the season on the PUP list, which increases the odds of C.J. Wallace making the 53-man roster. An 8th defensive back is likely to make the team, which should be Adams or Greene, as if anything, Hobbs has played himself out o

Specialists

Players Brought to 2008 Training Camp: 5
Players Kept in 2008: 4
Players Brought to 2009 Training Camp: 4
Locks: Jon Ryan, Kevin Houser
Bubble: Olindo Mare, Brandon Coutu

In all likelihood, the competition between Mare and Coutu was always going to come down to the preseason finale. It would've been nice if one of them distinguished himself by now, though.
