The Seattle Seahawks announced that they have released veteran safety Deon Grant.
Grant, 31, joined the Seahawks in 2007, signing a six-year, $31.825 million dollar, which included $11.5 million dollars guaranteed.
Grant was due to earn a $4 million dollar base salary in 2010.
Elected a defensive captain in each of his three seasons in Seattle, Grant never missed a game while with the Seahawks, often playing through injuries to extend his consecutive start streak to 144 games.
As a Seahawk, Grant totaled 234 tackles, 8 interceptions, and 26 pass break-ups.
Given his age and salary, as well as the amount of cash the Seahawks have committed for 2010 (~$120M), Grant's release shouldn't come as a complete surprise. However, Jordan Babineaux and Jamar Adams are currently the only safeties the Seahawks have signed for 2010.
The Seahawks also announced that defensive end Darryl Tapp has signed his one-year restricted free agent tender.
