Cornerback Joe Porter will be among several free agents trying out for the Seattle Seahawks during the team's pre-draft mini-camp, which gets underway today at the VMAC in Renton, NorthwestFootball.net has learned.
After posting 94 tackles and 5 interceptions in 44 games at Rutgers, Porter was not selected in the 2007 NFL Draft. As a free agent signee by the New Orleans Saints, Porter totaled three tackles during pre-season action before he was waived at the end of training camp.
Porter (5-10, 203) was signed to the Green Bay Packers' practice squad in November of 2007, and was signed to a "Reserve/Futures" contract following the season. After posting a pair of tackles and a pass defensed during the 2008 pre-season, Porter spent much of '08 on the Packers' practice squad before being signed to the active roster for the final month of the regular season. Porter was active for the Packers' 20-17 overtime loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
Porter posted 10 tackles, including one for a loss, for the Packers during the 2009 pre-season, but was waived at the end of the training camp.
Porter spent last Fall with the UFL Champion Las Vegas Locomotives, playing in the same secondary as Isaiah Trufant, Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant's younger brother.
Following the UFL season, Porter was signed to the Cleveland Browns' practice squad in the final week of the regular season, but was not offered a "Reserve/Futures" contract for 2010.
While it's common for NFL teams to bring in additional defensive backs for these voluntary mini-camps, the Seahawks currently have an NFL-low seven defensive backs on their roster. Given Porter's connection to Seahawks general manager John Schneider, who was the Packers Director of Football Operations during Porter's two years in Green Bay, there's a decent chance that Porter, and fellow mini-camp participant Kennard Cox, who spent part of 2008 on the Packers' practice squad, could earn a contract offer and an invitation to this year's training camp during this three-day tryout.
