As the Seattle Seahawks prepare to open training camp today, wide receiver Sean Morey has announced his retirement.
Morey, 34, signed a three-year deal with the Seahawks on March 29.
A seventh-round pick (241st overall) out of Brown University by the New England Patriots in 1999, Morey spent much of his first four seasons on either the Patriots' practice squad or as a street free agent. Morey finally caught on with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2003, appearing in 16 games for the Eagles that season.
While Morey did not have a single pass thrown his way, he showed an aptitude for special teams, posting 7 special teams tackles and averaging 13.3 yards per kick return. Morey spent the next three seasons as a core member of the Pittsburgh Steelers' special teams units, earning a Super Bowl ring (Super Bowl XL) and posting 42 special teams tackles, including a team-high 16 during the 2006 season.
In 2007, Morey signed a three-year, $2.7 million dollar contract with the Arizona Cardinals. Morey set career-highs in receiving that season, catching 8 passes for 131 yards, including two for 23 yards in a Week 2 win over the Seahawks.
During his three seasons with the Cardinals, Morey continued to excel on special teams, adding 43 tackles and a blocked punt in 2008. Morey was named the Cardinals' special teams captains during both the 2008 and 2009 seasons, and made his first trip to the Pro Bowl following the '08 season.
The 34-year old Marshfield, Massachusetts native has 11 receptions for 168 yards during his 8-year career, with 94 tackles.
Morey has battled concussions during his career, and was named co-chair of the NFL Players Association concussion and traumatic brain injury committee last October.
Last month, Morey told the New York Times that he was "rattled" by the news that the late Chris Henry had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a form of degenerative brain damage, at the time of his death.
"It's very emotional to hear--it rattles me," said Morey. "The fact that this has been found (in) guys (you) played against last year, an active player, I think it's sobering. You have to ask yourself how many are playing the game today that have this and don't even know about it.
"We have to educate the players," Morey said. "The players have to have the ability to have informed consent."
Hopefully Morey will continue his efforts to educate the players on this very important issue
