OT Smith signed to five-year, $25.5M extension

Line coach Russ Grimm thinks Marvel Smith is one of the best tackles in the NFL and yesterday the Steelers agreed to pay him like one.

Smith signed a five-year, $25.5 million extension with a $6 million signing bonus yesterday, making him the fourth-highest paid tackle in the league. Smith had started 38 consecutive regular-season games and four playoff games at right tackle with the Steelers before being moved to left tackle this spring to replace the departed Wayne Gandy.

In addition to his signing bonus, Smith will receive a $500,000 salary this year and a $500,000 roster bonus. As a six-year contract, the deal is worth $26 million to Smith, or $4 million less than the six-year deal Gandy signed with the New Orleans Saints over three months ago.

The deal means only two Steelers starters – fullback Dan Kreider and safety Mike Logan -- can become free agents next March.
