The Steelers suspended Ta'amu for only two weeks without pay after his drunken rampage through the South Side early Sunday morning resulted in felony counts of fleeing police, aggravated assault while driving drunk, three counts of aggravated assault, and 10 misdemeanors.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced the suspension at his weekly Tuesday press conference and said it would not change at a later time.
"That is our decision," Tomlin said.
Tomlin wouldn't talk about the process of reaching that decision, just saying, "We intend to do what's right. That's always our No. 1 charge and we believe that we did in this instance."
The Steelers will be given a roster exemption, and are expected to use it to sign an offensive lineman.
Tomlin said the Steelers had "a few young men in here today working out to potentially join us in some capacity, but obviously those that are going to help us win this football game (Sunday at Cincinnati) are in our building and have been in our building."
With Maurkice Pouncey questionable with a sprained MCL, Tomlin rotated guard-center John Malecki in with the first team at times throughout Monday's practice.
So Malecki, a two-year member of the practice squad, is the likely Steelers signee today. He's three years removed from performing as an All-Big East right guard at Pitt.
Tomlin indicated he might also dress one more offensive lineman than usual on Sunday, particularly if Pouncey is one of the seven who are normally active.
Tomlin also indicated that guard David DeCastro, the injured first-round draft pick, is making progress toward a successful return after the eighth game of the season.
DeCastro ran in a straight line Monday and Tomlin said, "I thought it was positive."
In other injury news, Mike Adams will replace Marcus Gilbert at right tackle Sunday. Gilbert flew to Charlotte on Monday to see a specialist, who determined that Gilbert wouldn't need surgery on his injured ankle tendon. Tomlin categorized Gilbert as "week-to week" but "out this week."
Also out is SS Troy Polamalu with his calf injury. Questionable are Pouncey (right knee), RB Isaac Redman (right ankle), LB Brandon Johnson (hamstring) and LB Stevenson Sylvester (right shoulder AC sprain).
