Brooks, a nine-year veteran, originally signed with the Steelers during the 2003 season (Oct. 22) when offensive tackle Mathias Nkwenti was placed on the team's injured/reserve list with a back injury.
The Steelers also announced they have withdrawn their qualifying offer to Nkwenti, making him a free agent and available to sign with another team. The Steelers selected Nkwenti in the fourth round (111th overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft, but he saw action in only one game - at Denver, Oct. 12, 2003.
Brooks has played in 97 games during his NFL career and made 62 starts. He did not appear in a game for the Steelers last year. Originally a second-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1995, Brooks played with the Eagles from 1995-98, playing in 64 games (46 starts). He played for the Detroit Lions (1999-2000) and spent the 2001 training camp with the Cleveland Browns before being released. In 2002, he played two games with the Green Bay Packers after being released during training camp by the Denver Broncos. Brooks was with the New York Giants during training camp in 2003 before being released during the final cuts.
Brooks re-signed; Nkwenti free
