Transcript: Roethlisberger in the wings

BEN ROETHLISBERGER

Will it be good to have Tommy Maddox around for awhile?
He's a great leader for this team, on and off the field. He's been a leader to me as a mentor and a coach. He's helped me out a lot and I look forward to him helping me out as much as he can.

What particular things has he helped you with?
A lot of things, all the way from reads on the field and plays, to off the field, how to deal with certain things. He's been almost like a fatherly figure to me.

Did you have any preconceived notions about Tommy and how have they turned out?
Tommy's a great quarterback, great guy, great leader who deserves his new extension. He's a great guy.

What did you expect coming here?
I heard nothing but great things about Tommy on the way here, that he's a great guy on and off the field, that he's a class act guy and he's proving that every day I talk and work with him. He's a great guy.

Could you ask for a better situation?
It's great to be a part of this organization with a great leader like Tommy, a veteran quarterback, a guy who can teach me. We'll see what happens. I've just got to keep working as hard as I can.

How's it all going for you?
It's going pretty well. I'm learning on the fly. It's starting to slow down and I'm starting to understand it a little better. I still have a lot to do and make a lot of improvement.

What's the toughest part?
Just learning the new system, understanding what's going on and getting a feel for everything.

Have you started thinking about developing your relationships with teammates and eventually becoming a leader?
They have a leader in Tommy and they all look up to him and that's great. It's just something that's going to come from playing, you know, letting the guys kind of follow, and it's something that will maybe happen over time. You just have to develop relationships with these guys on and off the field and see what happens.

How would you describe these guys compared to what you expected?
When I imagined a pro team, I imagined a bunch of individuals. This team obviously has great individual players, but this team is a team. It truly is. And people told me that this team is something special and you can see that every day, that they do care about each other. They just want to win football games.

Where did you hear that?
I heard it from a bunch of people. One was my agent and some others who know the team in certain ways.
