Terence Mathis is 5'10" tall and 35-years-old. As stories on the tipline indicate, Mathis is bent on getting a Super Bowl ring and feels that the Pittsburgh Steelers are the team that will help him get there.
Despite his protestations that he would play football for free if he could, Mathis is going to walk away with $775,000 for this upcoming season. The deal is cap-friendly, however, with Mathis creating less than a half-million cap hit in 2002.
One factor which played a role in Mathis' selection, according to analysis in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, is that the Steelers are attempting to replace WR Bobby Shaw and felt that Mathis' size is appropriate for someone filling Shaw's role, at least until Antwaan Randle-El is available. The Steelers also feel that Mathis can make a good tutor for their young recievers.
