Monday ( morning ) Camp Report 7/29/02
Punt drills dominated the morning session as the team worked with its flyers and jammers on the outside. All four starting defensive backs worked out as jammers on the outside - possibly a portent of things to come. The drill consisted of a flyer trying to beat a double team and get off the line. If they did get off the line, they raced the jammers to the punt returners - Randle El, Edwards, and Poteat.
Chad Scott seemed more intent on grabbing jersey than knocking the flyer on his butt.
Rookie receiver D.J. Flick got planted by the duo of Chris Hope and Deshea Townsend. But Flick got his revenge later, beating Townsend and Payton Williams down the field and forcing Townsend to clip him.
Demetrius Brown also got off really well one time against Hope and Eugene Clinton.
In the 7-on-7 drills, Troy Edwards looked sharp. He beat Townsend badly for a touchdown on one play in particular.
Terance Mathis had a pass from Tommy Maddox go through his hands and into the air where it was picked by James Farrior, who was working with the first team defense.
On another play Randle El turned Dewayne Washington around on a 10-yard out route. The kid's a keeper.
Injuries: Tight end Mark Bruener is getting closer to returning. Bruener ran patterns and caught passes while trainer John Norwig watched. Bruener is on the PUP list with a foot strain, but could return as early as today's afternoon session. Linebacker Pernell Griffin, who is on the PUP list with a hamstring injury, is also close to returning. Griffin went through a series of running drills for assistant trainer Ryan Grove.
