First Round for Dummies

The draft is all about team needs based on draft depth. And unlike most years, Pittsburgh's first-round needs are pretty clear: linebacker, defensive line, and offensive line, though not necessarily in that order. Ryan Wilson breaks down what the Steelers' first-round draft board should look like.

One of my concerns heading into the draft is that the players I think best fit the Pittsburgh Steelers' needs might all be off the board by the 15th overall pick. In one sense, this is what makes the whole process so exciting. Luckily, thanks to hours of draft preparation (read: watching NFL Network, reading draft magazines and scouring the Interwebs) and The Reverend Mike Mayock, who has posted his top 64 players -- which I have viewed ... and reviewed carefully -- I feel confident in writing that whomever the club selects won't be a stretch at 1.15. In fact, in three or four years, we might look and back think the Steelers got a steal with the pick.

Using Mayock's top 64 as a starting point, I thought I'd get down to the business of putting together my modified first-round draft board, complete with caveats and caveat emptor. (You know, because who isn't interested in what an uninformed Steelers' fan thinks two weeks before the draft?) So let's get to it...

Unlike some years, Pittsburgh's 2007 first-round needs are relatively clear: linebacker, defensive line, offensive line, though not necessarily in that order. There are a couple of ways to prioritize this list, the most logical being to look at Pittsburgh's depth chart, see where there are needs (based on lack of bodies, or future contract considerations, for instance), and draft accordingly. With that in mind, outside linebacker seems like an obvious choice to top the list. Joey Porter is now wreaking havoc in Miami and Clark Haggans is in the last year of his contract. James Harrison will replace Porter -- and I think he'll do well -- but after that, it's Chad Brown and Arnold Harrison on the roster. One is 37 years old and recovering from a serious knee injury; the other is a former undrafted free agent who played well against the Chiefs last season but there is no telling how good he'd be over the course of a 16-game season.

So, yeah, I'd say outside linebacker is a need. But here's my question: given the make up of this year's draft, is grabbing an outside linebacker at 1.15 the best use of resources? The not-so-short answer is maybe … but probably not. Looking at Mayock's rankings, only Jon Beason makes the cut and it's right on the number. It's important to keep in mind that this list doesn't take into account team needs -- it's just ranking the players from first to 64th -- but it's a good place to start the discussion. The longer answer to the drafting-an-outside-linebacker-at-1.15 question relies on the fact that there is some depth at the position on Day 1 -- and perhaps more than other Steelers draft needs. So if Pittsburgh chooses not to take Beason (or whomever) at 15, they'll have an opportunity to find a capable outside linebacker at 46. You can't say there is just as much quality depth for the other Steelers' first-round needs. Which brings me to guy who tops my board:

1. Patrick Willis Because I'm a mock-draft lemming, I just assume Patrick Willis will be off the board when the Steelers select. Maybe he will -- the Bills and Panthers both need a middle linebacker -- but maybe he won't. And if he's there, I think the Steelers have to take him (as much as a guy who, under normal circumstances, doesn't get in full-fledged draft mode until the middle of March). Mayock likes Willis' instincts, his physical skills and thinks he is a three-down player, but he only lists Willis as the 16th-best player.

Well, 16 is the new 15 because from the Steelers' perspective, it's all about team needs based on draft depth. And for Pittsburgh, they need a middle linebacker. Not to come in and start, but right now, the depth chart behind James Farrior (age: 32) and Larry Foote (age: 26) lists Rian Wallace and Clint Kriewaldt. Both players are serviceable, and that's important -- especially since they double as special teamers -- but these aren't the guys you want to build a defense around. I'm glad the Answer Man touched on this, and I'll repeat it here: Scheme is overrated. Whether it's the 4-3, 3-4, Cover-2, 46, or whatever, ultimately it comes down to execution. But -- and they're always a "but", right? -- Willis' athleticism makes him a perfect candidate for those instances when Pittsburgh sports the Cover-2 look. In passing situations, the middle linebacker is responsible for the middle of the field, anywhere from 10-30 yards from the line of scrimmage. Willis -- who busted out a sub-4.4 forty at the Combine -- would have no trouble patrolling that patch of real estate. And you know what? He'll be just as athletic when the Steelers are in the 3-4, nickel, dime, special teams, and even pregame warm-ups.

As much as I hate to admit it -- in fact, it nauseates me -- I think of Willis as being a difference maker in the mold of Ray Lewis post-murder trial pre-annual Dan Kreider steamrollings starting sometime around 2004. You know, guys that take over games all by themselves. I love Kriewaldt -- his nickname's "Buddy Lee" for cripes sake -- but he ain't that guy.

2. Adam Carriker For most of the draft season, I've been in the Adam Carriker business. That is to say, I'm intrigued about how versatile he makes Pittsburgh's defense. That's not to say Carriker's versatile -- in fact, most draft publications describe him as an "Aaron Smith clone" though I wonder who they compared Aaron Smith to when he came out of college ... and didn't get drafted until the fourth round -- but his abilities allow Dick LeBeau more flexibility in his game planning.

Brett Keisel more than held his own in first season as the team's starting right defensive end but in the most exciting news since Santonio Holmes single-handedly ruined Cincinnati's playoff hopes in the waning seconds of the 2006 regular season, we learned Keisel will get some looks at outside linebacker during minicamp. I think we all understand it's not a permanent move, but just one more thing for offensive coordinator's to worry about. But...

I spend a lot of time thinking crazy thoughts, and here's the latest: First, let's start with these assumptions:

* Patrick Willis is long gone when the Steelers go on the clock; * Carriker's available; * Keisel rocks the minicamp tryout at outside linebacker.

Alright, here goes: what if the team splits James Harrison's duties between outside and inside linebacker with the idea that he'll eventually move inside (remember, he got worked there in 2003) in a year or two? And the same goes for Keisel at outside linebacker. In the interim, Keisel and Harrison get reps at their current and prospective positions while Carriker learns the ropes for an eventual move to full-time defensive-end duties.

And if that's too much Fantasy Island for you, how about this: even if the Keisel-at-OLB experiment falls flat on its face I still love the idea of landing Carriker. Despite Keisel and Smith firmly entrenched as starters, Travis Kirshke, when healthy, saw plenty of snaps last season. Why can't Carriker take over that role while mixing in a little special teams duty? One of the great things about not having any real glaring needs is that Pittsburgh doesn't have to force players onto the field before they're ready. I mean, look what it did to Ben Roethlisberger. The guy wins a Super Bowl and then almost dies.

When you read scouting reports on Carriker you come across terms like "..more of a power-oriented pass rusher than an explosive edge rusher" and "is more of a 'meat and potatoes' type who prefers to punish the blocker rather than try to avoid." To which I say: hell yeah, this is exactly the guy the Steelers are looking for. Sure, he's not flashy, but has anybody seen Aaron Smith lately? And while no one will mistake Carriker for, say, Jevon Kearse, NFLDraftScout.com (one of my favorite draft sites) compares him to Richard Seymour. I'll take that.

3. Jon Beason, OLB

With Willis and Carriker gone, outside linebacker and offensive line are the obvious choices. (Well, unless you're of the opinion the Steelers should take a running back ... which I am not.) I'm going linebacker here for reasons that will soon become clear. Knowing that, it's just a matter of ranking the players from top to bottom. Usually when talking about prospective Pittsburgh outside linebackers, the first thing I look at are height and weight. Ideally, we're talking about 6'3", 245 pounds. But after thinking about this -- thanks, in part, to the Answer Man pointing out that scheme is sometimes overemphasized by the media -- I'm no longer married to the preconceived idea of what a Steelers linebacker should look like. And that's good because Beason is only 6'0", 237 pounds. Mayock likes him as an outside linebacker, loves his instincts and his motor (though he admits that Beason's occasional overaggressiveness can cause him to bite on misdirection plays, but hey, who doesn't have that problem?), and gives him the ultimate compliment by calling him "a football player."

NFLDraftCountdown.com adds this interesting little nugget in Beason's scouting report:

Beason could be in line for an other position shift in the NFL, as his size and instincts might be better suited for middle linebacker in the pros. Former Miami head coach Larry Coker considered Beason in the mold of some former Hurricane linebackers that played during the Coker era -- Dan Morgan (Carolina) and Jonathan Vilma (New York Jets).
We've heard this before and it's Beason's flexibility that makes him such compelling prospect.

I guess you could make the argument that his versatility should trump Willis on my draft board and I can buy that. One knock against Beason is that he's reached his "maximum growth potential" (that's scoutspeak for he doesn't have the frame to add weight), which could be an issue at outside linebacker. The other thing is he ran the 40 in the 4.7 range. That's pretty good for a linebacker, but it pales next to Willis' 4.37, and could be an issue in pass coverage. In the larger scheme of things, though, these concerns are small potatoes. And truthfully, if the Steelers landed any one of these players I'd be ecstatic.

4. Levi Brown You're probably tired of reading my grand plans for the offensive line if the team lands Levi Brown, but one more time, for the uninitiated: Move Brown to right tackle or move Marvel Smith back to right tackle -- a position he played in 2001 -- and let Brown work the left side, and pray -- along with Roethlisberger -- he turns out to be the next Marcus McNeill. Mayock only ranks Brown 21st, but again, he's not taking into account team needs. I mean, there's a chance Brown goes in the top-10.

Currently, the Steelers have four tackles on the roster and if memory serves, three usually dressed on game days. Smith still has a lot left in the tank and I'm not worried about his abilities; Max Starks came into the league in 2004 with the "soft" label. He hasn't done a whole lot to dispel that perception. I think he's been dependable at times (2005), but he's also been absolutely dreadful (2006 ... along with everybody else). With Pittsburgh tendering him a $1.3 million contract, Starks ain't going anywhere for 2007, but beyond that, who knows. Scout.com's Adam Caplan mentioned it in his draft chat and I don't disagree: Trai Essex is nothing more than a backup. Willie Colon played well late last season, but can he do it over the course of a season? His potential -- much more than Starks or Essex -- coupled with Pittsburgh's apparent interest in Joe Staley (who could be a late first-round pick -- Mayock has him at 29), are the only things that gives me pause when considering Brown at 1.15.

On the other hand, I think I'm slowing coming to the realization that drafting tackles with second-day picks and hoping the morph into competent starters is more a pipe dream than reality. I know, I was just pimping Colon in the previous paragraph, but I tempered my thoughts on his viability as a starter because we really have no idea how he'd perform over the long haul. That said, I'm perfectly content to draft centers and guards on Day 2. Last year, on average, starting NFL centers were drafted in the fourth round, and for guards it was the fifth round. Tackles were, on average, third-rounders. Obviously, there are exceptions -- extremes at both ends of the distribution for every offensive line position -- but as a Draft Day Rule of Thumb, I think taking offensive tackles on Day 1 is usually a good idea. And I think the Steelers should pull the trigger on Levi Brown if Willis, Carriker and Beason are off the board.

*******
You might notice that some names/positions conspicuously absent from my modified draft board. Linebacker Lawrence Timmons is M.I.A. and that is based on two things: First, we learned that Timmons showed up to his own Pro Day out of shape. Yeah, I don't get that. Pro Days aren't like pop quizzes -- they aren't sprung on the unsuspecting and unprepared. Pro Days are scheduled months in advance, and players have plenty of time to prepare for what amounts to the biggest job interview they'll likely ever have. Apparently, Timmons disagrees. Second, and less important, Mayock ranks Timmons 29th with three other outside linebacker between him and 64. Timmons isn't so good that his work habits are enough to differentiate him from the three guys ranked below him on Mayock's list. Not in my mind, anyway.

Also, in Sunday's column, I wrote that I'd be quite content if the Steelers took a first-round cornerback if all the other guys on their board were gone. Well, I'm taking that back. Pittsburgh's had some success with finding defensive backs later on Day 1 -- and with Ike Taylor, early on Day 2 -- so with no glaring need, I don't see any reason to change that philosophy. (Memo to Ike Taylor: Please don't let me down.)
