Robo-Punter

Steelers fans have been clamoring for a punter all off-season, and they got their wish. But local reporters apparently don't have an internet connection because they seem surprised. Ryan Wilson wonders where it all went wrong.

I'll admit it: I've been telling anybody who will listen that I should be working in an NFL personnel department. Forget that I thought the Pittsburgh Steelers should take a cornerback with their 2004 first-round pick, or that I thought so much of Fred Gibson I went out and bought this t-shirt, or that I would've been fine with the Steelers taking Darnell Bing in the first round of last year's draft if Donte Whitner, Santonio Holmes, or Bobby Carpenter were off the board. Don't worry about all that, it's not important now. What is important is this: I was pimping Daniel Sepulveda way back on January 31, and I made the case for drafting a pass-catching and blocking tight end two weeks later. Not as impressive as, say, correctly predicting the Super Bowl and World Series winners in the same year, but look, I don't have a lot to work with here, so you have to cut me some slack.

Monday I wrote this was the highlight of my sports-related life. That's not entirely true. I've noted before that I played baseball in college, though most of my "playing time" consisted of holding up the wall in the dugout. (Even in the lower rungs of Division I baseball, there isn't much need for no-hit, no-field second basemen. Go figure.) Anyway, during my junior season (1994), we were playing UNC Greensboro in War Memorial Stadium -- at the time, home to the Yankees Single-A team. I mention the Bronx Bombers connection because the year before, Derek Jeter was with the club, on his way north (both figuratively and literally). Even then, I knew of Derek Jeter. He was a stark reminder that two players, roughly the same age, couldn't be going in more opposite directions with their baseball careers.

I bring all this up because it sets the stage for the highlight of my sports-related life. During the first game of a two-game series against UNC-G I went yard. That's baseball talk for hitting a jack, a bomb, a tater ... a home run. This was my first -- and last -- collegiate homer. Hitting the ball over a fence some 330 feet away was quite an accomplishment for such an unaccomplished hitter, but here's what I remember most from the experience: Thinking, as I rounded the bases, "I just hit a dong in the same park Jeter plays his home games ... maybe I don't suck as bad as I think." But, it turned out, I did.

What's funny about this whole episode -- other than thinking that I might be a decent player -- is that according to reports (teammates heckling me from the dugout), I sprinted around the bases. Like the ball was still in play. Like somebody who had never hit a home run before might "touch 'em all." That's not such a big deal -- it beats pulling a Jeffrey Leonard "one flap down" -- but it was more proof that my future wasn't in organized sports. And the cherry on top? In that two-game series, I was 3-for-10, with one home run and six strikeouts. Six. Strikeouts. And that was the highlight of my sports-related life.

But a very close second has to be the 2007 Steelers draft. I'm giddy this week because for the first time, well, ever, I was right about something. Some may call it bragging; I call it a blind squirrel finding a nut. But hey, it counts. That's not to say I'm a little apprehensive about the selections; anything can happen between now and the start of the season. If the Pittsburgh Steelers Day-2 draftees have proven anything, it's that they have an expiration date of roughly four months. Plus, when you start drawing attention to yourself for being so smart, it usually blows up in your face. I'm well aware of the Eddie Mush-possibilities here, but after reading Ron Cook's latest, I feel much better about my chances.

It's not so much their sexy picks, the top two picks. There's nothing wrong with those....

It's the third- and fourth-round picks that are troubling.

A tight end and a punter.

Really, has anyone seen Cowher's number?

While you're looking for it, see if you can find a running back, will ya?

You know, the one the Steelers had to draft but didn't.

There's only one thing dumber than a franchise that long has under-utilized its tight ends drafting a tight end in the third round. That's trading up in the fourth round to take a punter.

A punter!

First of all, nothing bugs me more than a series of one-sentence paragraphs. It's stupid. Stop it. Lucky for Cook, that transgression is overshadowed by the meaning of the words in all those one-sentence paragraphs. I know being contrarian makes it easier to write a column -- who wants to write something laudatory about the hometown team? -- but if you're going to take that angle, keep this in mind: making contentious claims without substantiation doesn't mean you're clever, it just means you're lazy.

I've used this quote before, in reference to other Pittsburgh-area all-star scribes, but it certainly fits here too. It's certainly okay to question the team's personnel moves, but as a columnist with, you know, contacts, why don't you pick up the phone and ask some questions? Here's what I was able to dig up on the InterTubes about the '07 draft:

* The Steelers didn't draft running back Tony Hunt because they weren't all that impressed with him;

* They never seriously entertained the idea of taking Michael Bush either, since he's always hurt;

* Yes, Gardocki has never had a punt blocked (behind the line of scrimmage, anyway), but upgrading the position was a priority. Anybody who spends five minutes listening to Mike Tomlin knows he's serious about special teams.

This kind of gets to a larger point: Why was the Sepulveda pick such a shock to every Steelers reporter and columnist outside of this here site? The Spaeth pick I get -- even I didn't expect the team to take a Day-1 tight end -- but with Sepulveda, not one person on the message board was (a) surprised by the pick, or (b) didn't fully embrace it.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette was beside himself on Monday writing:

The Steelers entered the second day of the NFL draft with needs in the offensive line and at running back, yet when they made their first selection yesterday, they made history for the second time in two days.

While the New England Patriots were using a fourth-round draft choice to trade for receiver Randy Moss, the Steelers used theirs on a punter.

A couple of things. First, the Steelers addressed the offensive line in Round 5, when they drafted Cameron Stephenson (and Bouchette eventually agreed). Second, I'll refer you to the comments above about Tony Hunt, and more generally, that the team wasn't crazy about any of the remaining running back prospects.

Let me just put this out there: Who's likely to have a bigger impact -- a rookie fourth or sixth-round running back, or the best college punter who also was drafted in the fourth round?

And Randy Moss? Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel -- and one of the most respected beat reporters around -- offers some insight into exactly what the Patriots are getting. I'll pass.

And then there's this, from Bouchette's Tuesday chat:

Matt: Why is it so wrong to take an important specials teams player in round 4? (If you are going to take a punter, take the best one, especially if he can cover kicks!)

Ed Bouchette: My feeling is there are too many good football players, real ones, at that point. This guy is great, no doubt, and he averaged 46.5 yards a punt last year. But then, the average punter is about 43 so that equates to 3.5 yards more per punt and to me, that's not enough to sacrifice picks in the fourth and sixth rounds for. Of course, Kevin Colbert disagrees.

Guess what? Pittsburgh didn't even have an average punter last year. Before you rush to make the "Yeah, but Mike Barr's in camp this year and he can boom it!" argument, I'd remind you that Mike Barr's been in camp every year. And every year he gets cut. Must be something to that. Oh, and I'd be interested to hear what Sepulveda thinks about not being considered a "real" football player.

By the way, a random thought on Sepulveda: The guy needs a nickname. Anybody who looks like that, and metes out punishment like he's Terry Tate deserves one. My vote is for ROBO-PUNTER, a fictitious player born in this Football Outsiders thread. I think the description fits Sepulveda nicely:

ROBO-PUNTER does not miss snaps. ROBO-PUNTER will catch any snap within 20 yards of him with his extendo-arms, and he never ever has a kick blocked, not after he kicked a punt straight through a nickel back playing special teams who attempted to jump in front of one of ROBO-PUNTER's robo-punts. That was the only punt ROBO-PUNTER has ever not kicked to the one yard line, it only got to the 9 yard line because it was weighed down with the nickel back's intestines.

ROBO-PUNTER will usher in a Brave New World of punting-centric football, where punters are the highest paid players and ROBO-PUNTER is the highest paid of them all. All will live in fear of the ROBO-PUNTER, but they will also LOVE him, because he will have shown everyone the ONE TRUE WAY to play football, and that is the way ROBO-PUNTER plays football, by punting it to the one-yard line. Offenses will tremble, defenses will rejoice, and the fans will wonder in awe at the MAJESTY of ROBO-PUNTER.

All hail ROBO-PUNTER.

Signed,

ROBO-PUNTER

Yep, that'll do nicely. And I don't think we'll have to worry about Ron Cook anymore, either. It's a two-fer.

To be fair, by mid-week, Bouchette had softened on the pick (maybe he caught wind of ROBO-PUNTER lore). And after earlier criticizing the Spaeth pick, he's coming around on that too. Better late than never, I guess.

I know, you might point out that many Steelers fans did the same about-face concerning Lawrence Timmons, the first-round pick. I even wrote about it earlier this week. But here's the difference: Many of us didn't like Timmons because we didn't think he was a top-15 player, not that there were more important needs. I admitted to getting caught up in the mob mentality, even though I watch more HGTV than I do college football.

Ultimately, none of this matters -- it'll all get sorted in training camp. And while I'm not one of those people who think newspapers are on the way out, the guys covering the Steelers might want to mix things up down at headquarters. Maybe peek on the internet every now and again just to see what's going on. That way, you'll be forced to think outside the box (no more "must draft running back, must draft offensive linemen... " talk) and you won't be totally surprised when the team drafts a punter.

I admitted to getting caught up in the mob mentality, even though I watch more HGTV than I do college football. \r\n

Ultimately, none of this matters -- it'll all get sorted in training camp. And while I'm not one of those people who think newspapers are on the way out, the guys covering the Steelers might want to mix things up down at headquarters. Maybe peek on the internet every now and again just to see what's going on. That way, you'll be forced to think outside the box (no more \"must draft running back, must draft offensive linemen... \" talk) and you won't be totally surprised when the team drafts a punter.","skipOnMobile":true,"skipOnMobileReason":"Unsupported Markup","unsupportedMarkup":"body","media":[],"dateOverride":"2007-05-05T04:13:00","authorOverride":"Ryan
