Postgame with Mike Tomlin

Mike Tomlin talked about the highs and lows of his Steelers' 13-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Heinz Field on Saturday night.

Mike Tomlin, head coach, Pittsburgh Steelers

Of course we don't like coming out on the short side of those, but on a positive note it'll give us an edge going into next week, putting an exclamation point on our training camp.

Quickly, some things that I thought were good. We continue offensively to get big plays in chunks. Gotta be able to do that if you're going to be a dynamic offense. The splash plays are there for us. Didn't like what I saw on third-down-and-short. I think that the sign of a good offensive unit is one that can move the chains on third-down-and-short. We missed two third-and-shorts in the first half. That's unacceptable. We can't operate like that and be a good offense.

Defensively, the first guys going in continue to do well. They got off the field on third down. Love the way they responded to adversity. We had a sack-fumble there early on. They went on and they got off the field. They did that repeatedly. Liked that from them. Defensively, I thought once we got the mobile quarterback in there, (Aaron) Rodgers, we've got to do a better job of staying after him from a containment standpoint and being sound in our coverage. That's something that we can identify and get better at this week.

From a special-teams standpoint, I just thought it was the second week in a row that we exposed a glaring weakness in our PAT/field-goal protection, and in this league, if you're not sure in any aspect or any facet of your game, people are going to attack you. It's obvious based on the two tapes that we put out there that we need to address that this week and we will. Can't do it till you make problems like that disappear and we'll do that.

I'd like to compliment them. I thought they did a nice job, particularly establishing a rhythm running the football there in the second half, cutting the ball back in the zone-scheme stuff. They did a nice job.

We came up short. We're not going to judge with emotion. We're going to look at the tape. We're going to make corrections and move forward developing this football team, just like we did last week when we came out on the positive side of it.

Q: Any initial observations about the offensive line and the pressure coming from the left side?

A: Yeah, they did a nice job. They have some premium edge rushers. They have a 4-3 defense. They pride themselves on creating pressure with four. They have some guys that are built for the battle, you know, KGB (Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila) and some of the other guys down the line are capable of applying pressure, and that's probably something that our offensive line has not seen at training camp based on the nature of our personnel, but by no means are we making excuses for that. We've got to do a better job protecting the quarterback, particularly off the edges, and we'll do that. We've got to get in the lab on it and move forward. But aside from the pressure, we didn't play technically sound in that aspect of the game. We got a few holding penalties and things of that nature, and that must stop because those penalties of course are drive-killers.

Q: Did you see enough of the no-huddle (offense) to have an opinion on it?

A: Yeah, well obviously it wasn't successful tonight, but that's what this process is about for us. We want to see what we're capable of doing. We want to challenge this group. They went out and started fast last week. Wanted to present something new and different for them, see how they handled it. We could've handled it better. Hopefully, that will put an edge on the first team as we go into work this week, and I'm sure it will. I'm already starting to get that sense from seven (Ben Roethlisberger) that he's got a little edge to him going into this week. He wanted another shot at it and to go back out there on field. We didn't give it to him. We told him that hopefully that'll light his fire and get that group going as we go into next week. Wanted to take a look at it; risk-taking, yes, but that's what this process is about. No, we didn't like what we saw from it.

Q: Anything on Chris Hoke?

A: We're going to have to run some tests there. Basically he got leg-whipped. We'll see what the tests reveal. We'll know more in the morning there. Along those lines, the product of the leg whip was a missed tackle. I thought we missed a few tackles in the second half of that football game that's kind of uncharacteristic of us to this point.

Q: Are you unimpressed with your pass rushers?

A: I'm not impressed with the containment of that mobile quarterback. There's a difference between rushing the passer when you've got a pocket launch point and containing a guy when he's on the move. This guy was on the move and we lost containment and that makes it difficult. We've got to do a better job containing and we've got to do a better job in coverage down the field. It kind of goes hand in hand.

Q: Could you comment on Gary Russell (9 carries, 56 yards)?

A: Yeah, he's a downhill guy. We like his running style. He's working hard. But it's only a process for him. Hopefully we'll continue to bring him along and he'll show that he can develop a complete game – pass protection, etc., etc. He's showing us he's a capable runner but there's more to playing running back than that. So he's got more work to do but by no means are we disappointed over what he's shown us thus far.

Q: How was Carey Davis at fullback?

A: My initial response is that he did some nice things. We got a few perimeter runs where he showed his athleticism, got on some blocks on the perimeter, sprung us for some significant gains. But again, I like to judge it based off the tape. That is my initial response though.

Q: Was it pre-determined that he would play fullback?

A: Yes, we had a plan. He and John (Kuhn) are the swing guys. John was primarily the fullback last week. Carey was primarily the fullback this week. And that's just how we're going about building this thing and seeing what guys are capable of doing. You don't want to put too much on them in one football game, so you tell them at the top of the week, ‘this is your job this week,' and they can focus on it and hopefully they get a high-quality performance, knowing what their assignments are going to be. But we have some position-flexible guys. That was the focus of Carey this week and the initial response is that he did a solid job.

Q: On the cornerback depth, how's Ricardo Colclough showing?

A: I think he's been active. All of our guys have been active. They've been challenging throws. A missed tackle or two there in the second half, but that wasn't characteristic of our football team, not only Ricardo. But I'll reserve judgment on that until I get a chance to watch the tape and take the emotion out of it and see what he did.

Q: What about the struggles on special teams?

A: Let me address the PAT/field-goal thing first. We showed a glaring weakness from that standpoint last week when we weren't very sound. We got a holding penalty on a wing on a field-goal attempt and we had to re-kick the ball. Thankfully, Jeff (Reed) nailed it. We talked about it last week that when you show signs of weakness like that in the kicking game, people are going to come after you. We knew Green Bay had us on tape; we knew that they would. They did; they had success. The problem has been compounded. Great. We're going to have to respond to adversity. We're going to have to go back to work this week, and the secret is there's no secret. We're going to put our pads on and we're going to practice field goals and blocking field goals next week. That's what I told the football team tonight.

Q: With all the work you put into special teams, are you surprised that's cropped up? Or is it because you're using too many guys in the game?

A: I'm not going to make any excuse for who we got in there. The reality is the 11 on the field represent us. We have to do a better job in that area.

Q: As a defensive coach, did the no-huddle offense bother you?

A: We're not necessarily looking at it because we're concerned about how the defense is going to respond to it. It's just part of what we do and we're more concerned about our execution of it, our ability to communicate, our ability to line up and execute calls in great detail without huddling and communicating, because it's obvious that when you get in game situation you have to have the ability to do that. You have to be able to be thoughtfully non-rhythmic if we're struggling on offense. We have to be able to communicate if we need to use no-huddle because we're trying to catch up in a football game. So there are a lot of reasons why we work on it. We're more concerned about us as opposed to what it does to who we're playing.

Q: Will you use it not to catch up, but as a part of your overall game plan? A: Sure. I think you've got to be able to change the pace of football games for a variety reasons to keep people off balance. And that's just what we intend to do.

Q: Is Ben pushing for it?

A: Ben's pushing for a lot of things. The more you can put on his plate, that's what he wants. But that's what you want from a guy in his position.

Q: What goals would you like to accomplish this week?

A: I just told the men that we need to put an exclamation point on this training camp this week. We talked about finishing and having a finisher's attitude to everything we do. I liked the way we finished minicamps. I liked the way we finished Organized Team Activity days. Everything that we've done, we've had great attention to detail and great energy in terms of our finish. We don't want to ooze to a finish in this training camp, because how you finish things represents how you finish football games, how you finish football seasons, etc. So anytime we're coming to an end to something, we want to have all eyes on deck and be wired and be into it. I think that they will respond to that.

Q: Was that leg-whip on Hoke legal?

A: Well, a would-be tackler who missed was the guy that leg-whipped him.

Q: Any other injuries?

A: No, I think that was the only one to my knowledge at this point. I'm sure there will be bumps and bruises, but that was the only in-game injury.

Q: Anyone like Sean Mahan or anyone new to the lineup stand out?

A: No, particularly not positively, but we'll take a look and see what it looks like from a tape standpoint.
