Q&A: Mike Tomlin

The Steelers practiced Wednesday specifically for the Philadelphia Eagles, whom they play Sunday in their targeted dress rehearsal for the season opener. Mike Tomlin talked to Pittsburgh reporters about it, and touched on why he won't officially name his starting offensive line his starting offensive line, among other topics.

Mike Tomlin, coach, Pittsburgh Steelers

Good afternoon. We feel what we had was a productive, normal, simulated, in-season Wednesday. Tempo was great. You know, we're going through the process of learning how to compete off of service cards – offense serving defense, defense serving offense, special-teams unit service special-teams unit, which was good. I thought the competition was good. It's a little different than in training camp and during the off-season when it's Steelers versus Steelers and we're out there purely competing -- defense making calls, offense making calls. It's important that we simulate what the Eagles are going to do to us, what we perceive the Eagles are going to do to us, and still do it at a tempo that's competitive so we can continue to improve in that area. I thought that we did a nice job in that today. We'll look forward to taking another step tomorrow. All in all I thought it was a good day.

Q: Have you gotten in any Browns work?

A: Not on the grass, no we have not. Particularly with this week being a simulated game week, from a player's standpoint we want to keep them focused on what they need to do this weekend. As a staff, always we're multi-tasking.

Q: Are you game-planning for this game?

A: Yes.

Q: How does that differ from what you've done the last three weeks?

A: The last three weeks we've been working on our plays, what we perceive to be our base offenses, base defenses, base special teams, and really it's going to be basically the same but it's going to be a little bit more of an eye placed on doing what we feel like will allow us to be successful versus the Eagles. I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's a pure game plan because it's not. It's still preseason. We're still in the process of evaluating men. But we're going to go through the process of formulating ideas and presenting those ideas to the players, watching those guys develop around a game plan and mentality for the week, and moving forward into the weekend and trying to get the job done. Is it a complete game plan? No, it's not. It's still the preseason.

Q: In player evaluation, are you happy there are so many tough decisions to make? Or would you rather the decisions be easy?

A: No. I think that's part of it. I think that's developing a good healthy football team. Guys need to know that based on performance they have an opportunity to compete for work. These guys know that. We've got some worthy candidates. We're watching these guys compete and sort themselves out.

Q: How has Deshea Townsend been able to last so long at such a competitive position?

A: He is a professional. First of all, he's talented. A lot of times people talk about things regarding Deshea that's not talent related. You take his talent for granted. He's a very talented guy physically, but he's a professional. He approaches the game like a professional. He's a very smart guy. A lot of people play the length of time that he's played in the league and the number of snaps don't add up to wisdom and experience. He takes advantage of that. You know what you're going to get from him every day. He's a competitor.

Q: He didn't become a starter until, I think, his sixth year in the league. Is that typical of cornerbacks?

A: You know, a lot of attention is given to guys who are high-round draft picks and guys that start as young players, when the reality, in this league, is that most guys are mid-round, blue-collar guys, play special teams for a few years and get their opportunity. That's not a sexy story, but the reality is that if you look at people – look at our defensive front: Keisel, Smith, Haggans, Harrison, Foote, Farrior. I mean these guys were not anointed and given positions. These guys all were backup players who developed into what they are right now. A lot of them earned their stripes on special teams. For me, I think that's the story of the National Football League. It's not often a story that's told, but I just think that's the story of the NFL. The guys that are first-round draft picks and come in and start their rookie opener are in the minority, but a lot is written and said about their lives and careers. The reality, I think, is the opposite. I think there are more Desheas than there are the other.

Q: Earlier you talked about Ike Taylor and you had some positive things to say about him. Could you talk about why you said those things (?) and now how do you feel about it?

A: Because I looked at what Ike is capable of. I think as a new coach you come into a situation and you don't evaluate too much about what specifically happened because I wasn't here. I look at his skill set and I think about what he's capable of doing. Ike's a very talented guy. He has all the physical skills to be great. The more I get to know him, I know that he has a willingness to be great. He has worked extremely hard. I think it's paid off for him. He's been very solid in the preseason. Probably hasn't been challenged as much as I would like and he would like, but those challenges await him, so that's part of it.

Q: What were you looking for from him, especially after last year?

A: Again, I didn't base what I was looking for off of what happened last year. I was looking for from him what I look for from all corners and that's guys who play the game above the neck, guys who understand how to work their body, move in and out of movements. To me, the secondary is about instincts and body control. That's what defines guys. All the other things, 40 times and all that stuff, it can be overpromoted and overrated. I think the great ones, the one thing that they all have in common, they have instincts, they believe what they see, and they've got body control. So I've been talking to not only him but a lot of those guys about those things, about the development of those skills, about bringing those skills out in their game.

Q: Based off your experience at Tampa Bay, what do you see for him as far as potential?

A: Potential's a dangerous word. I don't like to live in that world. We are what we put on tape – players as individuals, coaches, and us collectively. That's what we've been talking about. We're in a feel-good stage right now. He's doing some great things. He's got to put it on tape and I know he's looking forward to doing that.

Q: Sean Mahan and Willie Colon ran first team again today. Has a decision been made there?

A: No it hasn't, but it's getting close. What I'm not going to do is make the decision because you guys want me to. We're going to keep the competition hot and we'll make those decisions after this football game.

Q: How's Jerame Tuman doing with his back problem?

A: I think we're on the path to recovery. We expect him out if not tomorrow then the day after. We're just moving forward (with) caution in regards to him. And plus we've got some young guys at that position who quite frankly need the work.

Q: Is Chris Hoke 100 percent?

A: I don't know if he's 100 percent but he's back. That's Hokie. He's going to drive the coaches crazy if we don't let him practice, but he's moving toward a hundred percent but I doubt if he's at that point right now.

Q: According to plan, are you going to switch any offensive linemen for the final week of camp?

A: No.

Q: What's your impression of Dan Kreider these last four, five weeks? And has his role changed a little bit in the way Bruce Arians is calling plays?

A: His role hasn't changed in terms of what he does and what he does well. Whether or not we do some of those things on a first and second-down basis, I think maybe has changed a little bit, but Dan's a team player. He understands what he brings to the table; we understand what he brings to the table. Again, from a fullback-position standpoint, football is a short-yardage and goal-line situation. I think that's just the nature of where this game is going. Situational football's important. It's an important position. We know what Dan's capable of.

Q: Will you try to get Gary Russell into the game a little bit earlier?

A: No.

Q: What about Carey Davis at fullback?

A: We may, but probably not at this point, in terms of getting him in versus the first team. It depends on how long they play their first team, quite frankly.

Q: Your front five offensive linemen, are they in a position where it's their job to lose?

A: No. We're thoughtfully not being very detailed in terms of communication on that, because we feel like we've got some guys competing. It'll play itself out. That's where we are with that, but we haven't told them one way or another where we are. We're just watching these men work.
