Steelers Quotebook:

Post-game with Mike Tomlin, Deshea Townsend, Troy Polamalu, Anthony Smith, and Ben Roethlisberger.

MIKE TOMLIN (partial)

We had a simple plan, really: no frills. And the guys executed to the letter.

Wanted to feature Dan Kreider quite a bit today and he got hurt early. Carey stepped up and contributed for us. The plan didn't change. The next man stepped in and marched forward.

I thought Ben was awesome today. Willie ran the ball well. We were good in the trenches with our offensive line.

Defensively, I got to take the hats off to those guys. They bled us a little bit but they've got a high-powered offense. They have a great quarterback, great wide receivers. The key for us was we made them kick field goals there in the first half. To hold that offense to 13 points, on the road, in the type of situation they were in, hats goes off to those guys.

Got to get a little better in our kickoff coverage. We're always searching for the ceiling; we're always searching for perfection. We'll always fall short but that's the nature of it.

On Kreider:

We wanted to attack downhill on some bubbles and he's a good isolation blocker. … We know Dan's a great isolation blocker and that was the plan today. There've been times in the past when we knew that Matt Spaeth is great on the end of the line of scrimmage and (can) create eight gaps and we start two tight ends. There are times when we want to get on the perimeter with two backs and we put Carey Davis in there. … That was the plan today. We faced a little adversity when he got hurt but the guys didn't blink. They stayed the course.

On lack of sacks:

You know, men, I mean what I say when I say that we're not concerned about stats; we're trying to win football games. I could care less whether or not we got a sack today.

Key to keeping ball in front of defenders:

Just understanding that they have firepower, and when somebody like that has firepower they're going to get a play or two. … They're going to hit some plays. You can't get down on yourself. You can't blink.

How important is Ben's escapability?

I think we're all getting comfortable with it, expecting those kinds of plays from him because that's what he's capable of. Tremendously talented, very smart, generally a great decision-maker under those circumstances when plays break down. And I think that's what makes him different than most. He remains calm. He makes good decisions as those plays break down.

What about the DBs coming off last week's performance?

I'm sure they want more splash. I thought there were instances where we could've tackled better, but that's a good receiving corps led by two very good football players. They stayed to fight today. That's what you've got to do when you play a high-powered offense like these guys. … You've got to give credit to our guys. They remained disciple, fought through some play action. … Anthony Smith is growing and developing each time out. He's doing a nice job.

On Ben:

It's not like he's doing those things when he doesn't have to. Plays break down when you try to make plays and he's making significant plays for us. That one where he moved to his left and hit Santonio coming back to his right on third down was a tremendous football play in that game and allowed us to continue on and kick a field goal and make it an 11-point game at that point. Big-time play. That's what he's capable of and that's what we expect. There's a level of expectation that comes with being him.

DESHEA TOWNSEND

Last night, Coach Ray gave this great synopsis of how these guys (Bengals) really feel about us. Some of the guys probably used that as motivation. At the same time, we used it as words of encouragement to keep pushing.

Coaches always talk about that and try to relate it to players, that they're going to make plays. You have one of the best quarterbacks in the league and two of the best receivers in the league. They're going to catch some balls, but don't give up the big plays. Make it hard for them.

DBs have an attitude today?

Oh yeah. It was one of those games where either they're going to talk or you're going to be talked about at the end of the day. Most of our guys, we don't really talk. We let our actions speak for how we play. The difference maker when you're playing an explosive team like that is being physical. We have some guys who like to go out and hit and like to go out and cover.

Bad feelings after last week?

You always want to play better. For us, any time you lose there better be some bad feelings. You don't want that taste in your mouth. You want to get rid of it and they only way you can get rid of it is to win the next game.

Anthony Smith doesn't talk?

He's a talker. I meant talking to the media. You won't hear us talking smack. But out there on the field, there are no mikes out there. You can't report what we say anyway, so it really doesn't matter. (We) can say what (we) want to say. But when you turn that film on, you'll see how guys are hitting and you know that these guys are going to come and play.

What's it like playing with two linebackers at safety?

That's a good thing. In this day and age, you'd better have some guys who want to go out there and hit. But they can also both run and cover. That's the thing that doesn't get noticed much. Anthony plays the deep ball as well as anybody I've seen. He's a good tandem with Troy.

What was Anthony like out there today?

Anthony's a talker on the field. If a guy's talking to him he's most definitely going to let you know how he feels. You can see that in practice. I always try to calm him down so he doesn't let that affect his decision-making on the field. That's a part of him growing up. The more he plays in this league, he'll understand that he gets to talk, but as long as you do what you're supposed to do on the field you'll be successful.

How were 84 and 85 handling it? Were they intimidated?

When you're behind, those guys don't want to get hit hard. If you can start pounding on them, that's when you'll see them start to drop some passes, or start to look at you more than looking the ball in. It goes hand in hand: When the offense starts to put some points on the board, we start to tell the guys to start hitting them and see how it ends up. They had a couple key drops at the end of the game.

ANTHONY SMITH

On hammering their WRs:

I was reading my keys and executed the defense. It allowed me to make some plays.

Talk about intimidating them:

I just tried to come out and make the receivers look for me instead of the ball. When you hit receivers like that, they tend to look for you.

On talking to Chad and TJ:

I just told them to make sure you've got your mouthpiece in. Before the game I told them that. Chad told me he don't wear one, and I told him he'd better start wearing one.

What did Troy pick up and hand to Chad?

He wears a set of gold teeth in the game and those came out on the deep ball when he hit the ground.

Did they think you carried it too far?

No, no, no. It's all fun and games. We gave each other smacks on the butt.

TROY POLAMALU

What did you pick up for Chad? Were those teeth?

His mouthpiece.

Anthony said …

Well why did you ask me then?

He said Chad doesn't wear a mouthpiece.

Oh, he doesn't? I don't know what it was actually.

Those were his teeth, wasn't it? Now, you can't lie, can you?

I don't want to be a part of a big story, no.

Tell me about the DBs coming out with an attitude this week.

We have to be like that every week quite honestly. We had a lot more opportunities this week. We kept everything in front of us. It gave us those opportunities. Last week we let some things get behind us. The more we can stay on top of the ball and keep everything in front of us, the more big plays we're going to make.

Do you like the cover 2?

Yeah. It's great. It's been working really well for us.

Does that make you susceptible to the run a bit?

Aside from the streak of not giving up a hundred, the number one objective is to win the game. If we have to do that then we have to do that.

Was last week a bad game for the DBs?

Anytime they put up that many points on us it is. Either they've got to run through us or pass over us. Anytime anybody puts up that many points you've got to wonder how the secondary's doing.

What's all the talking like?

I don't pay any attention to it.

Did it affect them?

I don't know. Sorry. Bad interview.

Never. Thanks, Troy.

BEN ROETHLISBERGER

We knew how big this game was for us, for the division.

On throw to Santonio:

That's one of those plays you probably shouldn't make. Bruce (Arians) said he's old enough, he doesn't need a heart attack by me doing that. It was kind of one of those ones where you say ‘no, no, no – oh, good play.' It was on a blitz and was real congested. I didn't have any time to throw it so I just stepped up, saw Santonio and tried to get it to him. He almost broke it.

Does it mean more to you to play in Ohio?

It's nice to win here, especially being so close to Miami, you know, school, seeing a lot of Miami jerseys around, fans. It feels good to beat a team like this. It really does.

Are you aware of your record in Ohio?

A little bit.

You're 9-0.

Yeah, it's a good feeling. They tried to bring it up yesterday in the production meeting and I wouldn't let them talk about it. I don't want to talk about it now.

On Baltimore:

Man, they roughed us up a lot. They're a great football team, offensively and defensively. We need another performance like we had today, all-around, all phases of the game.
