View from the Sideline:

Steelers Radio Network sideline reporter Craig Wolfley delivers his perspective on the Pittsburgh Steelers victory in Cincinnati.

This was some glorious football weather afoot in Cincinnati. After the cold of Denver (which is fine if you check your weather reports ahead of time), Sunday's game on the sidelines was a blast! And here's what I saw:

Chad Johnson looked like he wanted to be anywhere but in Cincinnati during warm-ups. He had a body language about him that said, "I'm so misunderstood."

When the Bengals engaged in a little pre-game huddle up and "bounce like we're on pogo sticks," Johnson wasn't having any of it.

The Steelers have held Johnson to one TD and zippo 100-yard games in the last seven. I was beginning to think Ocho Cinco may go Ocho Psycho if he goes Ocho No-show yet again.

Hogs staying with their blocks on a run is always a key factor. Today even more so, because Cincy has a slow set of LBers and if they can sustain their blocks on the front seven, it could be seven!

Right out of the chute, first play from scrimmage, Willie Parker takes the ball and hits it off the left side. Steelers C Sean Mahan chips on the DT and gets up into the face of Bengals MLB Anthony Schlegel. Sean positions himself to cut off the left side to screen Schlegel from Parker. If Sean locks him up by running straight through him, it's a quick six for the Parker. But Fast Willie cuts back right into Schlegel.

Position blocking on the second level is tough. If Najeh (a straight liner) is in there, position works. If a guy who will cut it back is carrying the pig, then it's a 50-50 chance positioning will/won't get it done.

Now this is interesting. Chad Johnson hasn't said boo all pre-game. During the huddle with a timeout on the field, he's yapping at James Harrison. And James has that, "Are you talking to me?" look on his face. This could be a serious miscalculation on Chad's part.

I've heard of idiots poking a lion in a cage with a stick, but I'm not seeing any iron bars out there between Chad and James.

A Syracuse Man, Anthony Smith shows perfect tackling form when he drops WR Glen Holt for a yard or two gain on a reverse. You don't see a lot of secondary guys anymore who are willing to stick a shoulder in there and wrap their arms around a guy's legs.

The Turk up in the booth had this to say about the Cincy front five on O. "They look like dancing bears."

They have what I call a waddle technique. As in they come off on the snap and waddle while locking up with the D-linemen. It comes from coaches who believe that hogs should run block as if they had a board between their feet.

Chuck Noll used to say "Run block like you run." In other words pick'em up and put'em down like you're sprinting. A narrower base true, but it's much more powerful for drive blocking.

This is what I'm talking about when I say that the O-line needs to stay with their blocks. Willie Parker runs up the middle and its clogged up like the Squirrel Hill tunnels. Everybody keeps mushing and Willie, after pushing on the backside of Big Red and company for a couple seconds, bounces to the outside and outruns some slow LBs for a first down.

Hines Ward runs a perfect fake post and out on a gullible rookie CB named Leon Hall. Great pump fake by Ben, and Leon's feeling the breeze and still looking for his jock strap.

Carey Davis is fun to watch. In the second quarter, Carey takes a screen pass and immediately gets jumped on by DE Justin Smith. Davis shakes Smith off like my dog Jake shakes water off his butt after a bath. He turns an eight-yard loss into a five-yard gain.

Fourth and one from the Steelers two-yard line. Marvin kicks a FG. The Bengal players look upset. I smell dissension in Skyline Chili land. But none other than the great Dick LeBeau said it was the right thing to do at the time when I chatted with him in the locker room post game.

The end of the second quarter has Willie scooting to the outside following Big Red (Alan Faneca) who executes a perfect "log" block on the contain man.

When you log a man, you use your inside shoulder to turn him, and the back goes outside. This must be done at a high speed and you can't pre-determine this. If the contain guy gets up field, then trap him with your outside shoulder to his inside and kick him out. Alan had about one and a half steps to decide.

The second half brings more of the same only even more dominance by the Steelers offensive line. The double teams are ripping gashes into the Bengal line and the guys are finishing blocks. Ben has enough time to knit a sweater in the pocket. The Bengals couldn't sack a bag of groceries with a hundred dollar bill and a Giant Eagle discount card.

Ahh, that's when Ben becomes a victim of his own success. He's so dad-gum good at pulling a rabbit out of his hat, but every now and then he tosses one of those that you go, "Noooo…"

But here's the thing. I love his confidence. It's that confidence that makes him a franchise QB. There would be no fifth Super Bowl without #7.

Najeh takes over for a while in the fourth quarter. This is running the ball at it's purest. Give 'em the ball and get outta the way! Ooops … Sean Mahan didn't. That would make him the recipient of a 245-pound ballistic enema. Ouch.

If you're going to run a no-huddle, then the Bengals need to up the cardio of their offensive linemen. Right now all those woolly mammoths have their tongues lying on the ground.

It might be worthwhile to keep an eye on the news coming out of Cincy this week. Fifteen out of the last eighteen years the Steelers have left Cincinnati with a win. Even Carson Palmer may go "postal" this week.
