Answer Man

Jim Wexell found the Answer Man in a near inconsolable state this week. He's all but put the nail in the Steelers' coffin after their loss to the Jets. But keep in mind, the Answer Man felt the same about the team in 2005.

JW: Well, how ticked off are you this week?

AM: You're disappointed because the team is obviously not what I'd hoped it was going to be. I think this was very revealing, in terms of when you also look at what's happened leading up to this point. This team has trouble on the road. This team has trouble dealing with prosperity. I think these are not things you turn on and off in a couple of week's time. In 2005, that team won in San Diego in September; that team won in Green Bay without its quarterback and its running back. So, when it was ready to go on the road at the end, it had some history of accomplishing some things in its past. This team can't win on the road, except for division games and you don't generally play division teams in the playoffs. When you look at that 2005 season, that win in San Diego was big. The way they came back and won that game showed a lot of guts. The quarterback played well down the stretch and a lot of that was what you saw in the playoffs. Not so much that the quarterback had to play well down the stretch, he had to play well in a short period of time when you needed him to do it. The San Diego game it was at the end; in the playoffs it was at the beginning. So this team, I don't know what it is that makes you good on the road or not, but I think it's missing. So as I said this was more revealing than something you get angry about. But I was angry Sunday.

JW: Where does the blame lie for the loss to the Jets?

AM: Well, Aaron Smith missed tackles against the Jets. I mean, seriously, I cannot remember the last time I saw Aaron Smith miss tackles. I think that was kind of symbolic of the entire game.

JW: But he missed tackles on a good back. Aren't the Jets better than their record?

AM: To me it's not the same. Last year's Jets had a different line. Their mindset was different. This Jets team this year not only had performed poorly but it was really at odds in a lot of ways with some of the things that the coach was implementing, especially on defense. These guys were not happy about switching to a 3-4 with what they felt was not their best personnel, and that the changes were being made just to make changes. So the Jets – I'm not going to give them that. It's the same as saying the Steelers were the Super Bowl champs when they went to Oakland last October.

JW: All I'm saying is that coming out of the bye, this was the same team with a better running back and a quarterback with a stronger arm.

AM: I don't think they are the same team. They lost Pete Kendall. I mean, they were beaten down by the reality of what they had done to that point. It's like saying the Steelers were the same team.

JW: But the Steelers righted their ship. We saw their true nature emerge late last season. Can't that happen to these Jets?

AM: No. Not this year.

JW: Okay, here's my other excuse: The last group of bye teams had a great advantage with a bye so late in the season and they all won.

AM: Yeah but who did the Patriots blow out? It's still Buffalo. You used the word ‘excuses.' That's what it is. I mean, Eric Mangini's so smart he's throwing to a third-string quarterback in the corner of the end zone to win the game. So, I just … no, see now I'm mad. Let me say this: Right now, the Steelers don't belong with the elite teams.

JW: The elite team, not teams.

AM: No, even the Colts. What they're doing with what they're without is pretty significant. I mean, who did the Colts just lose to? They didn't lose to the Jets. They didn't lose in Denver.

JW: Denver just beat Tennessee.

AM: That's the slappy mediocrity of the league. You either separate yourself or you're part of it.

JW: You mean the 1978 Steelers couldn't lose on the road? What did the fans do back then without the internet?

AM: That's my point. The 78 Steelers didn't lose to the Jets.

JW: The 1979 team lost to some poor teams and still won it.

AM: What saved the 79 team was that Houston went out to San Diego and beat them out there. The 79 team had turned into bumbling fools on the road and when Houston beat San Diego they didn't have to go. Hey, maybe Brady blows out his knee Sunday. That's the thing about the league. That's why everyone's going to turn on their TV this weekend, me included. But you're asking me today what I think today and I certainly deserve the right, like a woman, to change my mind. But right now we've seen enough things from this team to kind of make some conclusions.

JW: Let's look at some of those conclusions. Does the O-line stink?

AM: It's not good enough. It's not good enough. To play the way you have to play here, you've got to be able to run the ball. Mike Tomlin said the center is not getting any movement on big nose tackles.

JW: Jeff Hartings didn't in 2005.

AM: He was better than Sean Mahan. And, again, when you pick one over the other, people need to understand I'm praising the one guy and not ripping the other. I thought Jeff Hartings was a pretty good player. Was he the best? He was certainly in the top five of centers.

JW: This isn't a new problem. And Sean Mahan weighed 285 when they signed him. Why wasn't Tomlin worried, along with the rest of us, about rooting out nose tackles on draft day?

AM: I can't remember enough about draft day unfolding to know they passed on the next Jeff Hartings or not. My personal opinion is the best centers are guards and you've got to make them into that. I'm not interested in some 330-pound pig in college because as we saw Nick Mangold got his ass kicked on Sunday. I know Casey Hampton does that to a lot of guys, but he was supposed to be the best guy coming out that year at that position.

JW: I do know that Larry Zierlein wondered whether Justin Blalock could move to center and finally give them a huge body in the middle who could root out nose tackles, because Hartings couldn't.

AM: Okay. You just want to argue a specific point.

JW: No, I want to argue that the running back's hurting them more than the line.

AM: Okay, I mean, he needs to keep his feet under him more than anything.

JW: Isn't that a pretty significant concept?

AM: The thing about it is, to me, is that when you're watching it on a screen, and you're watching it in slow motion and stopping it and saying that's a lane, that's not real. That's not real. I mean, that's not the way it works. So is his vision bad? Or are these openings appearing where they're not supposed to be? The way the Steelers ran the ball under the previous head coach, it's not ‘Run to Daylight.' That's why Jerome a lot of times would run into the back of somebody. When they called it for a hole, you went and hit the hole even if there wasn't a hole there. If that's the case still, Parker has to be running where they tell him to run because it's built around ‘hitting it up in there,' as Dick Hoak used to say. The play is designed where everyone has to have confidence in the other people, and when you get the ball, if that hole isn't there, you have to trust that by the time you get there it's going to be open enough for you to get through. That's the way they run the ball here. Now, again, if that's what needs to change, to accommodate Parker a little more since you don't have that hammer, okay, I'm willing to listen to that, too. I just don't know that what we watch, when we watch video, is the way they're teaching him, so that's why I'm hesitant to say he missed holes on the back side. He doesn't run like Thomas Jones. They don't design the play to be strung out and then you cut it back. Now maybe they should do some of that more, but right now I just think they have to continue working with what they have and try to figure it out the best they can, because I'm not in favor of wholesale changes. I don't think a lot of personnel moves help you now. There's a coordination factor that's involved. I just think they need to try and get better in what they can do, at this point, and play it out and see how it happens. As I said, maybe Brady blows out a knee this weekend.

JW: We can all dream, can't we?

AM: (Laughs) Of course, I've been wrong. I was wrong about this team back in 2005 after they lost three games in a row.

JW: So there's also the hope that you could be wrong?

AM: Oh, there's always that hope.

JW: You're not giving up on them, but you think the loss to the Jets is a bad sign.

AM: Here's another thing, and this to me is part of that. A lot of that 05 stretch run was attributable to the way the head coach played that group of players down that stretch. And that's a big part of this league, too. We were talking about the Jets – same team, playoff team. Maybe in terms of personnel they are, but I think a lot of the things Mangini did this year kind of alienated some of those players, and things can go bad as a result of that because it really is a fine line, to quote a great ex-coach and philosopher here. But I think that this team is having to adjust to a different style of head coach. I'm not saying that Cowher's way was better, or wrong, and I'm not saying Tomlin's is correct, or worse. It's different and I think there's an adjustment period that needs to be undergone, because guys that knew no other way but Cowher's in-your-face are now dealing with a totally different guy. They want to succeed just as well, but whatever spark that was there sometimes, the emotional thing, isn't there anymore. So they either need to find that within themselves or learn that you can be a cold-blooded assassin and win in this league, just like you can be a raving lunatic and win in this league.

JW: That seems like a minor problem. That seems like all that's needed is a shift in the responsibility for being motivated.

AM: Yes, but do you have those kind of players? Do you have enough of them?

JW: What do you think?

AM: I don't know. I really don't. I do believe that over the course of his tenure here, Bill Cowher accumulated the kind of guys that he wanted to play that way. And I think, again, in 05 it all came together with Joey stirring the pot. Great. That's what you wanted. Now I don't know if, two years later, you can dial those guys in another way, and I don't know if it's fair to ask them to. But again, you've got a pretty good team here and I think what Tomlin is trying to do here is not just come in and dump the desk then put it back down and start over. That's just stupid. You've got a lot of good players here. Why waste years of anybody's life? So you try and see things the best way you can and come in to work each day and get after it. I'm just trying to look into the crystal ball. You were asking for answers and I'm just trying to give you some and I think that that's a factor.

They want to succeed just as well, but whatever spark that was there sometimes, the emotional thing, isn't there anymore. So they either need to find that within themselves or learn that you can be a cold-blooded assassin and win in this league, just like you can be a raving lunatic and win in this league.

AM: Yes, but do you have those kind of players? Do you have enough of them?
