Wednesday Practice Report

PITTSBURGH - One day after proclaiming Jerome Bettis and Jeff Hartings doubtful for Sunday's game at Baltimore, Steelers head coach Bill Cowher downgraded both players to out.
"They clearly could not play this week," said Cowher. "Both of those players are out and we'll take it week to week. The reports aren't worse, but on the short week, neither one of them can play."

Of the two, Bettis looked more capable of returning soon from his MCL sprain. Hartings was on crutches Wednesday after injuring cartilage in his knee Monday night against the Colts.

Cowher did say that he expects Mike Schneck to resume long-snapping duties Sunday. But don't expect the Steelers to cut long snapper-tight end Dan O'Leary just yet. Jerame Tuman and John Allred did not practice Wednesday.

In other news, Baltimore head coach Brian Billick said linebacker Ray Lewis would be a game-time decision. The Steelers, however, aren't buying it. "I know Ray and there's no way he's going to miss this game," said Steelers safety Lee Flowers.

With Hartings out, the Steelers cut safety Eric Totten from their practice squad and signed center Matt Anderson. Anderson was with the Steelers in the preseason.
