Russell released

The Steelers made a surprising roster move today after announcing offical signing of Charlie Batch.

The Steelers announced the signing of Charlie Batch today, and surprisingly announced the release of Gary Russell, who scored the first touchdown of Super Bowl XLIII.

Batch, according to the Post-Gazette agreed to the veteran minimum contract with a $50,000 bonus.

The release of Russell is a surprise in that the Steelers had only 64 of an allowed 80 rostered players. However, the team still has eight backs: Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore, Justin Vincent, Carey Davis, new fullback Ryan Powdrell and new halfback/return specialist Stefan Logan. Tight end Sean McHugh also plays fullback.
