Steelers Exploring Other Options At Safety

The Steelers are working on a contingency plan in case their deal with free agent safety Dexter Jackson falls through.

The Steelers are said to be the favorite to land Jackson, the MVP of this year's Super Bowl.

But if the deal falls through and Jackson signs with Arizona or re-signs with Tampa Bay, the Steelers are exploring other options, including a trade for Jacksonville's Donovan Darius.

The Jaguars named Darius, a Pro Bowl alternate at strong safety, their franchise player before the free agent period began.

But new head coach Jack Del Rio isn't sure Darius has the coverage skills the defense he wants to install requires, or that he wants to pay Darius franchise player money.

The Jaguars are said to be asking for a premium draft pick - first or second round - in return for Darius. The Steelers, however, aren't willing to pay that price and will only make a deal if the Jaguars lower the asking price.

Of course, should Jackson finally decide to sign his name on the dotted line with the Steelers, any deal for Darius would be dead.
