Ryan, Jets lose but reach playoffs

That roar coming from the Jets locker room Sunday was a good sign. They lost to the Chicago Bears but still get into the playoffs, giving coach Rex Ryan something to smile about.

If you were watching TV Sunday afternoon, you probably saw New York Jets coach Rex Ryan in the middle of his postgame session with the media. And then you might have heard a roar coming from the locker room nearby.

"By the way, I think we're in the playoffs." Ryan said in the middle of dissecting 38-34 loss to the Chicago Bears. "Not the way I wanted it, but I'll take it."

It was the best news Ryan's heard in a while. The Jets (10-5) have lost three of their past four games, essentially backing into the playoffs, and Ryan has had to deal with a series of embarrassing questions over a supposed foot-fetish video of a woman who resembled his wife Michelle. Ryan called the episode a "personal matter" and refused to answer questions about it.

All is well now. Ryan indicated he might rest quarterback Mark Sanchez, who played with an injured right shoulder but was 24 of 37 passing for 269 yards. Sanchez said he's still "pretty sore" but said he'd still like to play in the regular-season finale.

It probably won't happen. Asked if he expects an argument from Sanchez if he's told he's sitting, Ryan said, "Yes, but that's OK."
