Giants' Marvin Austin out for the season

Not only is New York Giants starting cornerback Terrell Thomas out for the season, but also second-round defensive tackle Marvin Austin is done for the year.

Austin tore his pectoral muscle on his left side and is out for this entire rookie season on the heels of being suspended for last season at North Carolina for violating NCAA rules. Austin will require surgery.

Plus, cornerback Brian Witherspoon is out for the year with a torn ACL.

"The injury report is not something that I'm real happy about," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said in remarks distributed by the team. "Sometimes [torn pectorals]can be nurtured back to some kind of significance but in his situation, playing where he plays, the degree of the injury and he did have his arm out to the side and he got caught with his arm out to the side, which is the way it happens so many times. Evidently the doctors decided that this requires surgery."
