Vikings rule out Adrian Peterson

Not surprisingly, the Minnesota Vikings have ruled out star running back Adrian Peterson due to a left ankle sprain. He was downgraded on the injury report from doubtful to out for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. The team announced he won't make the trip to Atlanta.

He's dealing with a high-ankle sprain.

Peterson is unusually durable for a running back with a penchant for contact. He's only missed three games previously in five NFL seasons. Peterson ranks sixth in the league with 872 rushing yards and has scored 12 touchdowns.

The Vikings will go with Toby Gerhart at tailback. Meanwhile, the Vikings promoted tight end Allen Reisner from the practice squad and cut wide receiver Stephen Burton.
