Patriots IR Andre Carter

The New England Patriots placed defensive end Andre Carter on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury, ending his season. And the Patriots signed defensive lineman Cedric McKinley to the practice squad after recently trying him out. Carter, 32, signed with the Patriots on Aug. 8.

Carter, 6-4, 255 pounds, originally entered the NFL as a first round draft pick (7th overall) of San Francisco in 2001 out of California. He was signed by Washington as an unrestricted free agent on March 15, 2006.

Carter has started all 14 games for New England in 2011 and has 59 tackles and 10 sacks. He tied a franchise record with four sacks at the Jets on Nov. 13 and was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.

McKinley, 24, was originally signed by the Minnesota Vikings as a rookie free agent out of Minnesota on May 4, 2010 but was released prior to the start of training camp. He was re-signed by Minnesota on July 31 and has spent part of the 2011 season on the Vikings' practice squad.
