Jets locked in with Holmes

The New York Jets followed through on their stated intentions to hold onto controversial wide receiver Santonio Holmes, keeping the enigmatic team captain on the roster. It was an expensive undertaking, costing the Jets $15.25 million in guaranteed money. Because Holmes remained on the roster Tuesday, a $7.25 million guarantee was triggered through the 2013 season.

Holmes' $7.75 million 2012 salary is guaranteed under his five-year, $45 million contract.

Holmes was a disruptive force in the locker room and in the huddle, clashing with quarterback Mark Sanchez and former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

The Jets are sticking with Holmes, though. And Jets coach Rex Ryan has said that Holmes and Sanchez will go on a retreat to try to mend their issues.

The Jets benched Holmes in the regular-season finale against the Miami Dolphins after he argued with teammates in the huddle, including tight end Dustin Keller.

Holmes slumped to 51 receptions for 654 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

The Jets are counting on Holmes since Plaxico Burress isn't expected to return. For more coverage of the NFL, go to Follow me on Twitter: @RavensInsider
