Da'Quan Bowers tears Achilles tendon

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Da'Quan Bowers tore his Achilles tendon during an offseason conditioning workout, the team announced. His plans for surgery Friday to repair the damage are still being finalized. Bowers predicted that he will play this season via his Twitter account, writing: "2013?? Get real... I'm playing THIS year 2012"

Bowers was selected in the second round last year out of Clemson.

He played in every game with 25 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in six starts.

It's unclear if Bowers is out for the season or just the majority of the 2012 campaign. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers cut former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson.

The team is holding onto defensive tackle Myles Wade after previously announcing he was being cut when they signed wide receiver Tiquan Underwood.
