Hakeem Nicks breaks foot

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot today running a route, an injury that will require surgery Friday to repair the damage. Dr. Robert Anderson will insert a screw. Nicks is expected to be sidelined three months.

Meanwhile, cornerback Brian Witherspoon tore his anterior cruciate ligament for the second consecutive year and was waived-injured.

The Giants signed defensive back Dante Hughes, who tried out at a rookie minicamp two weeks ago.

Hughes spent his first two NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and the last three with the San Diego Chargers. Hughes has been credited with 81 tackles, one interception and five passes defensed.

Witherspoon was signed by the Giants on Dec, 30, 2010 after stints with Jacksonville, Detroit and Carolina.
